Velvet cushions and a spray-lacquered Danish desk from Ebay add to the blue theme, while the Zak + Fox fabric on the headboard provides a strong contrast. Animal motifs and a small workspace make this a perfect kid’s bedroom.
Bed is chanting my name tonight. Chet is cutting all four back molars and that results in a very tired household. Plus we had to say goodbye to daddy this morning and drive him to the airport at crazy-o-clock Also congratulations to Eve and the
Pattern plays a starring role in the main bedroom of this Chelsea house, the work of decorator Paolo Moschino. This unusual leaf-trellis design is part of his range for Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam, and has been used for the curtains, bedhead, cushions and chairs and costs £99 a metre. The sisal wallcovering is ‘Sable NC07’ from Clarence House. The bench is 19th-century Italian, while the mahogany table is English, from the same period.
Wooden flooring can give a clean, spacious look, but unless you have underfloor heating, carpeting is the cosier option, bearing in mind that you’ll be walking around in bare feet at least some of the time. Another point to consider, if you’re a light sleeper or live in a neighbourhood where it can be noisy at night, is that carpets can help to muffle sounds, whereas wooden floors won’t. That said, you can always achieve a happy medium with polished floorboards strewn with luxurious, toe-friendly rugs.
This is a photo of my 8 year old son’s room, styled and photographed by myself. It’s a modern Breton themed bedroom. I styled this bedroom in the autumn to bring a fresh, bright and happy feel to the room. I made sure that a cosy feel is maintained, with the soft throw on the bed for bedtime tucking in and the cushion for casual lounging. Everything is positioned conveniently, such as the comforting bedside light, an accessible bedside table for his drink and storage below his table for toys. Next to his bed is a laundry bag which encourages tidiness. To the right of his bed is a large shelf of favourite books, recently converted to his workspace. To the left of his bed is an empty area for running around with friends. Image credit
Bold colours and a variety of smart textures and weaves showcase wool’s versatility in this bedroom. Green ‘Fennel Leaf’ walls (paint from Sanderson) and padded headboards feature in this twin room. The latter are ‘Olympe’ from Ensemblier London and covered in ‘Folklore’ by designer Kit Kemp, available from Christopher Farr Cloth.
Once the basics are in place, decorating is where the fun begins. Choose a feature to be the focus of your room. That can be a beautifully upholstered headboard, a fancy mirror, a few indoor plants, or simple and clean white bedding combined with a fluffy rug.
Not a design scheme for the faint hearted but one that we rather love. The furniture may have a Louis XV feel but the introduction of hot pink and lime green accessories and the all-over lattice effect wallpaper keep it ultra contemporary.
Not sure if a neutral palette is attention-worthy? Think beyond the expected. Sophisticated florals on the walls, metallic accents, and an elegant light fixture are just enough to make this room sing.
Grove Lodge, the Cambridge home of Tim Knox, director of The Fitzwilliam Museum, and landscape designer Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, provides the perfect setting for the couples growing collection of and curiosities. In the spare bedroom a gallery wall of antique pictures has been coupled with a brass bed-frame and gingham bedspread.
This bedroom is full of texture, with an exposed brick wall setting off the earthy palette. Maximising light and space was essential to show the owner’s post-war art and sleek French art deco furniture to their best advantage in this elegant Pimlico flat. In the bedroom nineteenth-century photographs bought from Portobello Market hang above the bed, while built in bookshelves flank the windows.
There can be few House & Garden readers who are unfamiliar with the cult names and sought-after colours of the Farrow & Ball paint chart. Friends and business partners Martin Ephson and Tom Helme, the men responsible for planting it firmly in the nation’s consciousness, sold the company in 2006, and have since launched textiles company Fermoie. House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming created a pretty scheme using their fabrics. The padded headboard, upholstered in the ‘Rabanna’ cotton is from Fafio, while the sofa and chair are both from Howe.
Does your child have a favourite book or television character that you’re considering including in a design scheme? Bedding is the clever option as it doesn’t involve too much commitment (and we all now how fickle kids can be). We love the creative use of paint on the walls which works with the theme now but could also be adapted later.
In newer construction, drywall is normally hollow and supported by vertical 2x 4 wood beams (studs) that are 16” apart. If your bed is set up on a non-exterior wall, use a stud finder to mark where your bed’s wood wall beams are and cut out an alcove. Your new alcove may not be incredibly deep, but it may be all you need for small necessities like an alarm clock or some personal items.
I have seen this image come up on my Pinterest feed a few times in the past and have always thought I would love to be lying in that bed reading a good book! I love the contrast of black and white and think it’s a clever decision to have the fur on the end of the bed so it warms up the rest of the scheme. The artwork is oversized but not overpowering and I am always drawn to a simple colour palette- in this case it’s black, white and brown with a touch of gold. It’s simple, elegant and beautiful. Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park in Sussex. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This spare bedroom on the second floor has a four-poster canopy bed and moulded fireplace in keeping with the manor’s Jacobean look.
