Think neutral bedrooms have to be boring? Then take a look at this masculine, relaxing, and anything-but-dull bedroom from architect and designer Patrick Brian Jones. When the palette is quiet, clever use of subtle pattern adds interest without overwhelming the small space. A folded throw blanket in a contrasting hue adds extra oomph to the foot of the bed.

Weathered shutters add a touch of shabby chic flair to this cozy gray and white bedroom from Décor Gold Designs. It’s easy to work a vintage vibe into even a small bedroom – use an antique chest as a nightstand or footboard, set an old door in place of a headboard, or adorn your walls with framed vintage embroidered handkerchiefs, maps or botanical designs.

Children’s bedrooms should be fun, bold and playful. As a designer, I love to let my imagination run wild when working with children’s bedrooms. With a little inventiveness you can create the most wonderful spaces with unusual paint effects and bespoke joinery. Use MDF to create a built in bed in the shape of house or teepee, section off a corner for a reading area in the shape of a castle or make the most of a tall ceiling with a mezzanine, as in the image above. Children love to have their own special space and creating a reading nook or hiding space allows them to escape into their own magical world. In the past I have designed rooms with tented ceilings, trampoline floors and a bed made from silver birch branches decorated with fairy lights. Go on – have some fun! Image Credit

Just because the room is small doesn’t mean the bed has to be. We love the elegant four-poster from Guinevere, in this house in Cap Ferret designed by Guy Allemand and Jonathan Tuckey. Furnished sparingly, apart from the fantastically clever storage flanking the door; the lack of furniture makes the view of the sea beyond the balcony doors the main event.

The soft setting of this room, with classic period features like cornicing and the palest grey colour scheme, is given a touch of the exotic with a carved wooden bed and Eastern-inspired printed and textured textiles.

It’s the little details that make this room so appealing. Storage is cleverly hidden away, while the four-poster bed tucked into the alcove is a subtle style statement. The texture on the bedspread and pop of red are the perfect finishing touches.

Light green walls and a headboard in Colefax & Fowler’s ‘Evesham’ give this bedroom designed by Caroline Harrowby a fresh, floral look. Its eclectic style is made elegant with pretty curtains and a painted dressing table from the owners’ previous home.

All the furniture in this bedroom at Soho Farmhouse is wooden, including the panelling of the sink in the ensuite glimpsed through the doorway. This was designed to capture the Upstate New York cabin feeling.

The bedroom of artists Linda and David Heathcoat-Amory is a graceful high-ceilinged cube. To the left of the four-poster bed hangs a Pissarro drawing; the painted pale-blue and white stripes on the walls were inspired by the photographer Derry Moore’s house.

This bedroom is full of texture, with an exposed brick wall setting off the earthy palette. One of a pair of lights by Swedish designer Poul Henningsen hangs over the bed in this spare room, which is also lit by a skylight. The bedspread is by Brigitte Singh, based on a Mughal design, and the cushions are made from an antique Japanese obi sash.

This gorgeous girl’s room has hand painted, full room wall mural with wooden floors. The atmosphere in this room is enough to give wings to the imagination to your little fairy. I won’t be surprised to find her in the land of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, fast asleep in the garden, waiting for her prince. The traditional bed and the furniture enhance the mystic feel of the atmosphere.

The colour coral is back in vogue. According to Josephine Bennett, head of design at Laura Ashley, warm tones of sable with touches of coral give a subtle and slightly less feminine feel to this colour scheme. We like.

Famed for her work on Firmdale Hotels, Kit Kemp’s own home is unsurprisingly full of her trademark mix of pattern. The fabric used for the bedhead and cushions in the bedroom are by Christine Van Der Hurd.

  1. A good desk is a must! This will be the centre point of a girl’s teen life! From homework and study to using as a dressing table, find a desk with drawer storage for books and supplies but also for hair care, a mirror and beauty essentials. Choosing a white desk option will suit any bedroom scheme, is low cost and easy to maintain. Personal space is so important as a teen, so add her own style in accessorising a funky chair design, a bright pattern blanket and some colourful desk tidies and that’s one cool combination of a desk and dressing table design!
