As tween girls become full-fledged teenagers, it’s likely they’ll be using their bedrooms for overnight fun with friends. Add drama and ambiance for nighttime use with vintage wall sconces. Often priced much lower than chandeliers, sconces are installed directly to walls and may need to be rewired prior to installation. To ensure safety, most interior designers recommend dropping off vintage sconces at local lamp repair shops where fixtures can be brought up to code for as little as $25.

Simply take the dimensions of the inside of your fireplace, cut out the wallpaper to fit and Blu-Tac it into place. A few ornamental logs, tea lights or strategically placed baubles also help achieve this festive look.

Choosing the right rug for a tween space can be tough since their tastes change so frequently. While light-colored solid rugs are prone to showing spills, stains or dirt, textured solids are great for hiding imperfections. This black, white and gray wool rug helps tie the black and white accents of the color scheme together while also offering a soft underfoot surface.

I love the fact that my bedroom is a comfy nook tucked under a pitched roof. To highlight the cosiness I have painted the pitched roof in a dark anthracite, that is ‘Down Pipe’ from Farrow & Ball. The atmosphere is meant to be calming and soothing. The overall colour scheme is moody with various hues of blue and grey. For that dash of boho style I’ve opted for a few houseplants around my bed and West African vintage indigo throw with a traditional pattern. It’s my favorite place to unwind from long and stressful days. Image credit

Designer Jane Taylor has ingeniously incorporated storage into her small bedroom in Chelsea. Shallow cubbyholes in the panelling next to the bed function as bedside tables.

This room has a beautiful vintage/industrial style. A bedroom to me is a place to rest and to surround myself with calmness. This needs to be reflected in the decor. Nothing should draw too much attention. It needs to be laid back, full of natural materials, casual and cosy.

To me, there is nothing better than being able to create a sense of nature inside, connecting the two worlds. Natural fabrics such as linen, matched with cotton and wool knitted throws to create a casual yet cosy atmosphere is perfect for these chilly nights. The age of your daughter will largely determine what type of décor or theme you should use in the room. With a newborn, you will want to find baby girl nursery room ideas, such as a farm animal or fairy theme, that will be appropriate for many years or that can easily be altered as your daughter grows and her tastes change. Circus design or farm animal themes are good baby room ideas for girls that your daughter will not quickly out grow. They are also both gender neutral themes that can be incorporated into a shared toddler room for girls and boys. For either of these designs, you can paint the walls of the room a neutral color such as pale yellow or blue and then purchase bedding, art, curtains, wall decals, and accessories that are consistent with the theme. Wall decals and pretty girls bedding sets with pink pigs, white ducks, yellow chicks and other barnyard animals are farm-themed accessories that are inexpensive and can be easily removed or altered when your daughter is older and wants to transfer her space into a teenage bedroom.

The best thing about having a small or strangely shaped room is the opportunity it presents to use your space imaginatively. The alcove behind the door, in the home of designer Patrick Williams of Berdoulat design, has been turned in to a charming sleeping nook. Enclosed behind the curtain are shelves, and a lamp for reading. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Lamp Room Gray’; while the random-width floorboards were bought on eBay. Reclaimed drawers are used under the bed as storage.

Walls and pillows are accented with graphic flowers. For another modern twist, polka-dot sheer curtains contrast the girly florals.
