Nina Campbell made the apple-green silk bed hangings in the spare room of Diane Nutting’s manor house in Wiltshire, while the eiderdowns come from Counting Lambs, an excellent source for traditional silk versions like the ones in this house. They are available in a range of pretty colours and prices start from £399 for a single.

The colour coral is back in vogue. According to Josephine Bennett, head of design at Laura Ashley, warm tones of sable with touches of coral give a subtle and slightly less feminine feel to this colour scheme. We like.

Folksy textiles look fantastic when added to an otherwise simple scheme. The eclectic display of ornaments on a shelf above the bed fits with the theme and looks great – just ensure you hang it high enough so you don’t hit your head every morning!

The colours are peaceful and pleasant, as they are throughout the house. ‘Above all, I wanted the colours to be calm; this pale colour palette makes a narrow house seem less claustrophobic and fussy, and meant that I could add pattern through the other textiles.’

Mixing rich colours and pattern can be difficult to get right. Dark patterned blue wallpaper ‘The Brook’ from Morris & Co, which pattern continues around the room adds character and a playful feel. The bright ‘Red and Cream Stripe’ wool kilim rug from Sinclair Till lightly compliments the pattern and helps to balance and tie the room together.

This gorgeous scheme triumphs in its simplicity. Soft whites and creams, with feminine details like the tissue pom poms and a bone inlay bedside table, create a dreamlike environment. The large mirror leant, rather than hung adds to the relaxed chic effect.

Blogger Rachel Denbow’s kids’ room is proof that you don’t need matching beds or bedding in a shared room. An eclectic mix of furniture (particularly when as eye-catching as this large display board) can be equally as stylish.

There are so many things about this room that we love: the matte grey painted floorboards, the assortment of rugs, the pretty bed canopy and sweet wall stickers and the soft but warm colour scheme. Whether you copy the whole scheme or just take one element, you’ve got guaranteed style.

Designate areas in a bedroom for specific purposes. A cozy bench by the window is a sunny spot for reading. Big baskets on a shelving unit house toys and books in a central location. A small table in the center of the room can be set for tea with friends or can be used as a work area for art projects or studying.

A modern bedside table and monochromatic rug designed by Studio Ashby feature in the guest bedroom in a flat that has been transformed from a stark new-build to a characterful home. The pattern on the padded headboard is reflected in the artwork above the bed.

Surface View, with its vast library of contemporary and traditional designs, is a House & Garden favourite. Images can be printed in any size and on to a huge variety of mediums – from murals to ceramic tiles. It is also possible to enlarge and print your own images, which come as either traditional wallpaper or as a self-adhesive, allowing for repositioning. Here, decoration editor Gabby Deeming has used ‘China’ from the V&A collection (250cm square, £300).

Fiona Shelburne has a lot of experience decorating country homes, so she knew what she had to do when it came to this Hampshire home. The beautifully crafted four-poster bed, made by Richard Phillips, has red Le Cuona linen curtains; to lift the mood of the room, the inner fabric is the Claremont print ‘Plumettes’. Two bedside tables by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam are surmounted by French grisaille-painted mirrors. ‘The velvety carpet from Tim Page is lovely underfoot, says Fiona Shelburne, ‘but it has to be vacuumed all in one direction, rather like a cricket pitch. It looks its best covered with masses of tiny footprints at the end of the family weekend.’

This kid’s room features a Hans J Wegner bed, which sets the tone for Danish simplicity in this white space. Simple, modern furniture complements the bright and airy feel of the scheme, while mustard curtains and a framed print on the wall add colour and interest.

Being a teen girl myself, I have to say this is not realistic whatsoever. I don’t know about all the other girls, but I would have liked something WITHOUT having to go out and buy everything new. That’s just my opinion, some of these were great to dream about..but not all of us could afford this.

The bed frame is antique, but for similar try the ‘Somerset’ at Laura Ashley. A French, nineteenth-century ash chest of drawers from Colefax and Fowler Antiques complements the iron and glass chandelier. For similar try the ‘Chantal’ at Graham & Green. The raffia wall shade on the back wall is from the The Conran Shop.

This bedroom would be stunning solely with the striking dark grey wall panel and monochrome bedding, but the addition of the rich ochre throw, writing desk, vintage chair and chic accessories adds an extra element that takes this stylish scheme to a whole new level.

Looking for modern bedroom ideas? Try smart schemes in black and white, warmed by the tones of wood, copper and leather. A giant knit throw (this one’s £149, from The Conran Shop) adds a touch of the eccentric.

If there’s one thing that makes a bedroom, it’s soft bedding you can see yourself burrowing into. Get that right, then add a striking pendant light and statement nightstand for a look that’s the epitome of effortless style.

Spark your child’s imagination as they rest their weary heads with a fun ceiling hanging. Why not even create it yourselves? Simply invest in some colourful material, heavy thread and fabric paint and let your creativity run riot.

An attic conversion makes for a perfect guest room. The scheme is simple but elegant with minimal but impactful pieces of furniture and furnishings. A sofa allows guests a little chill out time away from the rest of the house. Be careful though, they may not want to leave.

Lighting offers an opportunity to add personality while also introducing different styles and design eras. When it comes to tween girl’s rooms, vintage light fixtures are almost always a sure-fire hit. As retro styles become increasingly popular for tween and teen girls, it’s smart to consider searching local flea markets and thrift stores for fixtures from the 1960s and 1970s. This brass and smoked Lucite chandelier is from the mid-1970s and is considered a modern classic. Should the tween girl grow tired of it, the fixture can be used in another area of the house or, since vintage pieces hold their value, it can be sold online through a vintage consignment mega-site.

A pop-up play tent or tee-pee is an adorable – not to mention fun – addition to a kids’ room. Take this idea from kids’ wallpaper and fabric specialists Hibou Home and make your own with fabric and string.

Designer Candice Olson created the ultimate girl’s getaway by turning a small bay window into the background for an inspiring workstation and craft area. The white built-in desk unit provides plenty of drawers, cubbies and cabinets for keeping supplies tucked away and out of sight. Dramatic magenta track curtains create an easy separation between workspace and sleep space.

Have scrap wood going spare? Upcycle it into a new piece of furniture as a bedroom idea. The bed in this spare room, made from wooden mooring posts from Venice, was Anne-Marie Midy’s grandmother’s. Along with husband Jorge Almada, Anne-Marie owns design company Casamidy which sells furniture and accessories. The couple live in Brussels with their two young sons.

In this London house designed by Suzy Hoodless, the children’s rooms were kept graphic and simple; Suzy hates ‘cute’ decoration that they will quickly grow out of – she has used a Børge Mogensen cabinet as a changing table in her own home. So the only concession she made to the children’s was bright primary colour. In one of the rooms a custom-designed mural has been painted on the wardrobe door.

Everyones saying these rooms look like hospital rooms, or rooms for little kids, or adult women maybey. But there not, maybey one or two of them are, but these rooms really would be great teen rooms. For people who could afford it, and have enough money to where they don’t have to be practical. So like i said before, these rooms are really neat, just not practical, or probably not even affordable.

Although carpet is usually the most popular flooring choice for bedrooms, it’s hard to keep clean in high-traffic rooms. Rather than going through the motions of having carpet professionally cleaned yearly, it may be a better investment to simply replace wall-to-wall carpet with resilient vinyl plank flooring. Averaging less than $1.50 per square foot, vinyl plank is easy to install by cutting to size with a utility knife, then staggering each plank to create a pattern. As opposed to carpet, which stains easily, vinyl can simply be wiped clean with a sponge.

There’s no denying that it’s the wallpaper that makes this room. The pretty, ditzy print used to paper the whole room is combined with classic white furniture and a pale cream carpet to ensure the overall scheme is not too busy.
