Turn your little one’s room into a storage oasis with built-ins. Here, a custom-designed built-in window seat includes storage space for everything from books to toys to clothing. In each cubby, a pull-out basket waits to easily hide toys and unsightly cords. Not shown, a large cabinet next to the bed provides more storage for art supplies and games. This is a photo of my 8 year old son’s room, styled and photographed by myself. It’s a modern Breton themed bedroom.  I styled this bedroom in the autumn to bring a fresh, bright and happy feel to the room. I made sure that a cosy feel is maintained, with the soft throw on the bed for bedtime tucking in and the cushion for casual lounging. Everything is positioned conveniently, such as the comforting bedside light, an accessible bedside table for his drink and storage below his table for toys. Next to his bed is a laundry bag which encourages tidiness. To the right of his bed is a large shelf of favourite books, recently converted to his workspace. To the left of his bed is an empty area for running around with friends. Image credit

When it comes to bedroom furniture essentials, you will need a bedside table or nightstand (two if you are sharing your bedroom), a dressing table, a full-length mirror, and clothes storage in the form of a wardrobe, chest of drawers or both. If you have the space, a bedroom chair or end-of-bed bench is an added bonus, giving you somewhere to drape clothes or sit while you’re putting on your socks and shoes.

As in their dining room and their upstairs hallway, the faux panelling in the spare room of Tarquin Bilgen and wife Isobel’s Suffolk farmhouse was painted by Alan Dodd. Blending the old with the new, Peggy and Hereschel Post – with the help of Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works – have created an astonishingly interesting space. In the bedroom round swirls echo those of the Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell paintings on the walls, but there is a spicy twist – a gigantic circular sculpture, a burst of metal spillikins by Lizzie Farey, hangs behind a modern four-poster bed.

To make what was a juvenile, childish girl’s room more appropriate for a growing tween, its walls were painted a deep shade of violet, album cover-inspired art was hung to create a focal point, vintage lighting was installed on the ceilings and the walls, and women’s fashion fabrics were used in upholstered accents.

An upholstered screen is a useful device when working with pattern as it can be moved to fill empty spaces (or hide areas such as a desk in a multi-purpose bedroom) and is relatively simple to recover when you tire of the design.

Emphasize a soaring ceiling with a showstopping theme. In this playful room, alternating stripes of sky and baby blues creates a tentlike ceiling treatment. ‘We loved the cool, pared-down style of a house belonging to a Swedish art collector, which we had seen in a magazine,’ say the owners of this west-London terrace home. Enter Hugh Leslie whose unmistakable style gradually evolved the house into a smart family home. At the front of the house on the first floor is the pretty, generously proportioned main bedroom. 1. A dressing room or walk-in wardrobe is the ultimate luxury in a bedroom. It’s best to go bespoke (funds allowing), as an experienced cabinet designer will know how to make the most of every last inch of storage space, incorporating shoe racks, clothes drawers, built-in shelves, hanging rails and more.
When designing a bedroom, the most obvious place to start is with the bed. After all, without a good bed, it’s difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Make sure you choose the right size bed for the size of your bedroom. A super king size bed will dominate a small bedroom, making it difficult to move around the space or fit in any other bedroom furniture, while a standard double bed might look a bit lost in a large bedroom. Measure your bedroom, and make sure the bed you choose will allow for at least 70cm of circulation space around the sides and end of the bed.
