The bedroom is usually quite a simple room. The design and layout is far less complicated than a kitchen or bathroom, so you can put a lot of focus on the decoration, style and colours you’re using. Start by thinking about who will be using the bedroom. Is it you alone? With your partner? Your teenage children? That’ll set the tone for your style.

The bamboo desk in the main bedroom of textiles designer Susan Deliss’ French country house came from Golborne Road, London. The curtains are made from heavy French linen, dyed a bright pink – here Deliss proves that pink needn’t be precious, it can be bold and punchy when used correctly.

Sometimes there’s much to be gleaned from the design of a good hotel room. This one the Playa Grande Beach Club is painted in what it’s owner calls, ‘faded bathing-suit colours’, and layered with art, objects and vintage furnishings. The bed forms the focal point of a perfectly symmetrical tableau of furniture, starting with the wall mounted lamps and side tables and culminating with the bamboo sofa, coffee table and string chairs which form an appealing seating area for morning coffee and newspapers.

While adults prefer a space that’s calm and understated, teens appreciate vibrantly colored, high energy rooms. The wall is the biggest area you can work with in a bedroom. Some of the best teen bedroom ideas involve the walls. Here are our favorite:

Are Ariel, Cinderella and Belle your daughter’s best friends? Does she love every Disney princess and dream of arriving at a ball in a pumpkin carriage of her own? She’s not alone — the many princesses of Disney have been loved through several generations of girls. What better way to decorate her room than with a full-wall mural of her favorite animated characters? You can hire a muralist to create a one-of-a-kind design, or buy a wallpaper mural that is easy to apply on your own.

Love the photos, really gave me some ideas on decorating my next flat. The bedroom in the new property is quite small but the walls are painted in a cream colour – will be easy to pick the right elements to decorate it. Since I’m a tenant, I’ll have to find non-destructive ways of decorating the place. I will also have to think how I’ll remove and clean the place when my tenancy comes to an end, but this isn’t a problem since London is full of shops and I have plenty of things to choose from.

When deciding on bedroom colour ideas, you should remember to consider not just the walls and floor, but also the furniture and choice of bedclothes. Simple magnolia walls, for instance, can be offset with ebony wood-tones and dark fabrics for a cool, stylish look, or with bold, vibrant fabric choices to create an overall design that’s young and funky. Whatever colours you choose, it’s important to remember that you have to sleep in your bedroom, so make sure the overall effect is peaceful and conducive to relaxation.

Bedrooms aren’t just for sleeping anymore. This hanging bubble chair provides a unique place to read and study, as well as the girls only ladder-accessible secret hideout. To keep this spacious bedroom from getting cluttered, designer Randy Weinstein added plenty of storage options, from the modern open bookshelf to the built-in closet organizer.

It’s the little details that make this room so appealing. Storage is cleverly hidden away, while the four-poster bed tucked into the alcove is a subtle style statement. The texture on the bedspread and pop of red are the perfect finishing touches.

The new kids’ collection for Zara Home is giving us some serious interiors inspiration. Not only do we love the dinosaur print bedding and sweet accessories but the sophisticated muted hues make a nice change from the primary colours seen in many of the high street ranges.

‘I wanted the house to be comfortable above all, and for me colour is very much part of that,’ says Jacquie Rufus-Isaacs of her eighteenth-century farmhouse in the Cotswolds. With the help of her friend, decorator Scott Maddux, she has enhanced the house with a slightly unusual palette, which is no surprise as Jacquie’s real love is painting. She has a studio in a converted farm building where she works on her expressive still lifes. Furnishings are equally various and include a sofa is upholstered in a Lelièvre stripe in the main bedroom, inherited antiques, junk-shop finds and a selection of paintings. These range from eighteenth-century landscapes to works by living artists including Barbara Stuart and Ken Howard. Jacquie’s eye ensures a harmonious composition.

This light and airy bedroom looks like a wonderful getaway. The symmetry of the space and decor makes for a pleasing view and you can just imagine yourself watching the clouds go by through those sky lights! I love how the dark green tone and botanical cushion prints bring a little of the outside in. In my opinion, adding a feline friend will always make your space seem welcoming! Image credit

One of five upstairs bedrooms, this room marries comfort with style. The cowhide rug and black and white patterened chest of drawers keep the colour sceme minimal, but a spash a green on the dresser continues the home’s connection to country-side.

Lighting offers an opportunity to add personality while also introducing different styles and design eras. When it comes to tween girl’s rooms, vintage light fixtures are almost always a sure-fire hit. As retro styles become increasingly popular for tween and teen girls, it’s smart to consider searching local flea markets and thrift stores for fixtures from the 1960s and 1970s. This brass and smoked Lucite chandelier is from the mid-1970s and is considered a modern classic. Should the tween girl grow tired of it, the fixture can be used in another area of the house or, since vintage pieces hold their value, it can be sold online through a vintage consignment mega-site.

The result bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This spare bedroom on the second floor has a four-poster canopy bed and moulded fireplace in keeping with the manor’s Jacobean look.
