Wooden flooring can give a clean, spacious look, but unless you have underfloor heating, carpeting is the cosier option, bearing in mind that you’ll be walking around in bare feet at least some of the time. Another point consider, if you’re a light sleeper or live in a neighbourhood where it can be noisy at night, is that carpets can help to muffle sounds, whereas wooden floors won’t. That said, you can always achieve a happy medium with polished floorboards strewn with luxurious, toe-friendly rugs.

This cosy bedroom at Soho Farmhouse features green floral wallpaper, creating a countryside feel. Matching curtains form a cosy canopy around the four-poster bed. This design is ideal for a small space.

Naomi Paul was commissioned by Studio Ashby to make the beautiful hand-woven, offset wall and table lights. The wrap-around headboard takes on the appearence of luxurious wall panelling and makes the small space look bigger.

An entire room filled with bright color is too much intensity for a tiny space, but when you use a few hot shots of eye-catching color to heat up neutrals or classic black-and-white, the temperature is just right.

We recently updated my 8 year old’s bedroom and Pinterest was a great source of inspiration for me. She has a small room and I wanted to make the most of the space and decorate it in a way that would see her through her pre-teen years. I’m a huge fan of white walls and light spaces that can be brought to life with a splash of colour and styled with a bit of black too – you can’t go wrong with monochrome! This picture inspired me when I was putting her room together. I love that there is a place of everything but it still looks stylish AND lived in. The monochrome styling mixed with the pops of colour and a few kitsch accessories all work so well together. Image Credit

Jorge Almada and Anne-Marie Midy, the husband-wife duo behind design company Casamidy, aren’t afraid to mix things up in their home. The boys’ bedroom features a mix of leather headboards, maps, vintage airplanes and Marimekko Unikko print cushions.

If you’re afraid of mixing pattern, start with stripes. A variety of sizes in the same colour adds interest, yet fits with the calm atmosphere of a bedroom. Designer Paolo Moschino chose a nautical colour scheme of blue and white for this fisherman’s cottage in Cornwall.
