Moving from a tall town house to a west-London mews enabled interior designer Caroline Riddell to enjoy a more open-plan way of living. Upstairs in Caroline’s daughter’s bedroom, ‘Vertical Stripe’ wallpaper from Timorous Beasties lines the walls. It’s a masterclass in space management.

It’s hard to put your finger on what is so special about Ett Hem, a 12-room hotel in the embassy quarter of Stockholm. Ett Hem translates as ‘a home’, and it feels as though it has been lived in for ages, even though it only opened in 2012 – everything is in just the right place and gives the impression of being brand new, though ‘new’ here means in great condition rather than fresh out of the box. It is as if, simultaneously, the house has been repainted, the curtains laundered, the original furniture recently returned from the upholsterers, the bookshelves reordered, the plants recently pruned – the way most of us would like our own homes, if only we could find the time. Interior designer Ilse Crawford was responsible for the look. The wall cabinet in the kitchen was designed by Studioilse, and the company also sourced many antiques, including chandeliers lit by real candles.

Let’s face it, teenagers and orderly rooms are a rare combination. Messy rooms seem to be a teenager’s rite of passage. Good storage options will be the best feature they didn’t think they needed but will appreciate.

A foundation of sleek white offers a modern look for this girl’s room, while vivid sherbet green and lipstick pink add youthful personality. While a two-color scheme is simple, sometimes adding a third color can make a kid’s room sing. This also lets you incorporate a favorite, of-the-moment color. In this girl’s bedroom idea, bedding with the room’s pink and green scheme features a bit of blue, which also makes a splash on the storage boxes atop the dresser.

A modern bedside table and monochromatic rug designed by Studio Ashby feature in the guest bedroom in a flat that has been transformed from a stark new-build to a characterful home. The pattern on the padded headboard is reflected in the artwork above the bed.

Jamb director Henry Bickerton has revived a Victorian town house once strewn with pizza boxes with carefully chosen elements of English country-house style. In Henry’s son Archie’s bedroom, the striped wallpaper is from William Yeoward, adding a bright element of fun without compromising on the smart aesthetic of the house.

An organized and clutter-free bedroom doesn’t have to consist of clear storage containers and rows of school-style cubbies. A tall and simple bookshelf consisting of both drawers and shelves can showcase her favorite toys and collectibles, while keeping small trinkets safely stored. Design by Susie Fougerousse

i like a lot of the rooms but who has the money for that . we just sent one of my siblings down to florida for college(we live no where near florida) and now this year we are sending another sbling offf to college no way

Cushions from Beaumont & Fletcher are among the golden accents in this spare room in the London flat of Hannah Cecil Gurney, the daughter of Claud Cecil Gurney, founder of the handmade wallpaper company de Gournay. The walls are clad in a glorious green hand-painted wallpaper. Follow Hannah’s lead and inject some glamour into your spare room – we promise you’re guests won’t be dissappointed!

I prefer the cottage/farmhouse look in my home, though I live in a patio apartment. The bedroom above is typical of how I decorate. I’m really into the black, red, gray and white color combination. Also, this bedroom has a lot of textural elements that give it character and charm. The rug on the floor. And the wicker trunk at the end of the bed. I also love anything vintage, and having a piece of furniture that perhaps belonged to grandma fits right in. The red blanket on the wicker trunk looks handy to pull up when you’re reading a book or taking an afternoon nap. My blog is about coziness – so my rooms have to include that element to encompass all that I love about decorating. This is a cozy room. And that’s what I love most about it. Image credit

Sometimes all it takes is a few key accessories to give your bedroom a style overhaul: a striking chandelier, a feature mirror and, our personal favourite, a neon sign above the bed – the contemporary style of which contrasts beautifully with the more traditional touches.

Taking on the conversion of a disused chapel in Somerset, artist Jonathan Delafield Cook, illustrator Laura Stoddart and their two children (11 and 13 years old) have made the smooth transition from incomers to long-term residents. In this bedroom a simple storage wall has been filled with coloured boxes that match the rainbow pom poms at the window. A sweet mid-century desk for home work sits in front of the window.

In newer construction, drywall is normally hollow and supported by vertical 2x 4 wood beams (studs) that are 16” apart. If your bed is set up on a non-exterior wall, use a stud finder to mark where your bed’s wood wall beams are and cut out an alcove. Your new alcove may not be incredibly deep, but it may be all you need for small necessities like an alarm clock or some personal items.

The chief attraction of this room is the custom made canopy bed. The bed skirt and the frilly pillowcase along with the little step-up stool give a traditional look to the bedroom. The color combination in pink and brown is quite offbeat and amazing. These are examples of classy girls bedroom ideas!

This eclectic yet restful bedroom layers bold paint colours and vintage furniture with pretty, pastel prints. The wallpaper is ‘Birds’ (midnight) by Galbraith & Paul, 89cm wide, £124 a metre, at Tissus d’Hélène.

‘Stark interiors, where pieces of furniture are isolated with nothing to soften them, don’t look inviting,’ says Stephan Eicker, who transformed this Victorian terrace house in Chelsea into a warm, inviting family home. In this bedroom he mixed black furniture with the owner’s artwork collection, subtly mirroring the rich shades with layers of vibrant fabrics.

Tengo muebles color wengue, y cortinas y placard blancos. This room has a beautiful vintage/industrial style. A bedroom to me is a place to rest and to surround myself with calmness. This needs to be reflected in the decor. Nothing should draw too much attention. It needs to be laid back, full of natural materials, casual and cosy.

This bedroom is striking to me. It surprises you…such a delicate balance of masculine and feminine. You can’t help but to appreciate the subtle design elements reflected within the context of this modern Asian-inspired scale and colour scheme ~ the mysteriousness of the asymmetrical bookcase, the delicateness in how the objects are placed, and the luxurious feel the dark-on-light furniture gives. I get a sense of warmth but refreshed at the same time. Finally, the artwork chosen seals the sentiment of this overall design composition. Simply put, I love it. Image credit

Accent colors are all the rage, but they don’t just have to be on your walls. Bring the brightness to your furniture by painting the backs, shelves, or sides (or all of the above!) of bookcases a festive hue, like this fun and funky gray and pastel pink bookshelf. The same concept can be applied to a number of different pieces of furniture, like the drawers of dressers or the legs of desks. Feel free to go wild; there’s no place better suited to be coated with color than a teenage girl’s bedroom. Be bright and bold with your choices, or opt for more subtle and muted shades— either way, contrasting colors are a trendy and fashionable choice when it comes to teen girl room ideas.

Pom-poms, polka dots, bunting and crochet might sound like a little too much to have all in one space, but treated right and these fun prints, patterns and textures can create a bright and brilliant bedroom for a teenage girl. Balance warm orange and yellow tones with pale blues and expanses of white, if you don’t want it to feel overwhelming. However, it’s an ideal space to let your teen play with design options.

hi i am a 13 year old girl and i would just like to say that although i found loads of gr8 rooms i think that the room sizes are a bit big considering that i and all of my friends have very small bed rooms.

Definitely prefer the classic looking bedrooms to modern. Although the modern bedrooms look artistic and clean, they look too cold for my taste. I like soft, warm colors rather than bold and bright ones for bedrooms. I think it’s because brighter colors make me feel more awake, but when I am in a bedroom swings inside a girls bedroom want to relaxed and be calm. When I was a little girl I had a canopy bed — the hangings always made me feel like I was a princess in a fairytale or something. Fast forward 30 years later, and I still want to feel that way…my bedroom is decorated with Victorian accent pieces from LookInTheAttic. They restore heirloom pieces and do custom finishing. I am quite happy with my bedroom, but my daughter is the complete opposite from me — she wants to have bright pink polka dots all over her room. What do you say people? Should I give in?

Any time picking out the shade, think about the beautifying fashion. Some sort of modest, mossy green is useful together with modern day as well as craftsman fashion which integrate a great deal of wood in the furniture. Deeply green is useful with a additional traditional decoration and may end up being blended with other loaded colorings for instance red, wine red or darkish with an tasteful look. Apple green surfaces, along with sleep as well as eye-port material inside a structure together with a touch of reddish, properly go with cheap chic furniture. If you love ultra-bright colorings, think about green or chartreuse, matched together with violet or reddish for a fashionable look.

Klopf Architecture, Arterra Landscape Architects and Henry Calvert of Calvert Ventures Designed and built a new warm, modern, Eichler-inspired, open, indoor-outdoor home on a deeper-than-usual San Mateo Highlands property where an original Eichler house had burned to the ground. The owners wanted multi-generational living and larger spaces than the original home offered, but …

There are two ways to organize a small bedroom: You can make it dark and cozy with saturated berry reds or chocolate browns. Or, you can boost daylight with barely dressed windows and a light-bouncing color on the wall, such as cloud white or sunshine yellow. Either way, don’t take a weak approach. You can be bold in a small space without risking too much money or effort.

Not sure how to make a small space multifunctional? City-dwellers Sarah Raskin and John Kerl turned their bonus room into a guest bedroom/baby nursery with some smart decorating ideas and storage solutions.

Why I love this room: I’m a great believer in the ‘tidy home, tidy mind’ ethos, which is why I feel so at home with light, minimal spaces. This bedroom has only essential furniture in it and bright white walls to make the most of the light. Texture is key, from the bedding and rugs to the Z1 cotton lamp. I love the use of the small potted plants here, adding life and a splash of vibrant green to the room. The light wood flooring breaks up the white to introduce some warmth and the suspended clothes rails make a statement without the need to take up floor space. Image credit

Be smart about storage when decorating a small bedroom. Employ a nightstand with drawers and shelves and install a floating shelf above for extra storage in a small bedroom. Consider room organizers for small rooms for maximum clutter control.

Pastel colors are always a top choice for a child’s room, and they can look amazing on furniture as well as the walls. The blue and baby pink look quite beautiful alongside each other in this dresser. projectnursery.

The naturally subdued color scheme of rustic style is perfect for a small space. Use weathered wood, an interesting ceiling fixture, and whimsical touches like the faux animal heads in this enviable room from Peace Design to give your bedroom lots of interest.

Every princess bedroom needs a touch of glitter, and since lights are a lot like glitter, it makes all good sense to make switches shine bright. These may not be easy to come by, but the good news is you can make them yourself. faithfullyfree.

A fresh color palette of blue-green, orange, and purple looks sunny in this shared girls’ bedroom. Turquoise walls complement soft peach curtains and table lamps. A modern take on a traditional floral pattern covers the beds and ties in the wall and curtain colors, and adds in a splash of soft lavender. These sisters traded traditional girl’s bedroom wall art for a corkboard outfitted in floral fabric. Here, they can pin up their latest masterpieces or show off their latest homework assignments.

I am loving this red bedroom when typically I wouldnt. I believe the beige walls and white pillows and other white elements in the room save this from appearing small and dark. That accent wall is really nice.

It’s always so nice to refresh your space in little ways. You did such a good job. I love what you’ve done with the room in general. I’m actually obsessed with palette headboards my boyfriend is in the process of making us a smaller one, but repurposing it into a bed frame was a great idea. It looks awesome.

Think Pink! as the old song from the Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire film Funny Face goes. Pair a pink themed girls’ room with sturdy woods and sheer fabrics for a kid-friendly look that’s still stylish.

Your room does not have to all pink, or Barbie-themed, because you are a girl. Today’s girls are different, and they choose rooms according to their preferences and personalities. If your room is already well designed and you love your walls colors, then you can update the room’s overall design by only adding the theme of Dalmatians. All you are going to need is to get a white curtain garnished with black spots and match the blanket as well as the carpet. You are going to have a beautiful Marrakech-themed room.

Different styles of furniture and fabrics find themselves part of a cohesive whole in this room thanks to the choice of colors. A gray rug over hardwood floors gives a homey, comfortable feel and, paired with the matching gray of the walls, creates a neutral base on which to build the rest of the space. The small nook is utilized to its fullest as study space with a framed corkboard that reaches almost the ceiling, providing organization opportunities and the ability to add personal touches in a way that doesn’t feel cluttered. Complementary colors complete the ensemble, with teal and salmon accents abounding, even extending to the pale teal ceiling. A paper flower chandelier tops off the retro chic space, beautifully curated and sure to please any girl.

Creating a play area that both siblings can enjoy, even simultaneously, is super helpful, especially for tired mommies and daddies. Floor mats, cushions and soft larger items like a rocking horse and tents are perfect to outline the area and fun for both to play in. Place your older child’s toys in accessible storage containers, but higher than the floor so your youngest can’t easily touch it.

Shopping Bag Supply Holders: Instead of throwing away, you can repurpose those really cute and really strong shopping bags for more storage in teen girls room to corral everything from hair ties to markers. See the instructions via lezoemusings.

You can paint the ceiling in any bedroom, of course, but it’s an especially fun touch for a child’s bedroom. This girl’s room, found on JWS Interiors, is a pretty space filled with great touches like the chandelier, hanging chair, and shaggy rug, but it’s the circus-tent stripes on the ceiling that really kick up the whimsy.

It doesn’t take much to set an exotic style, so a small room is perfect for a global look like the Moroccan showstopper here. Just three elements – the silver pendants, the silver pouf, and the fantastic bed – are all it takes. If none of those are within your reach, consider adding an exotic throw pillow or two to your bed.

Damask wallpaper is a soft substitute for the neon, and a new window seat adds the perfect place to curl up with a book. A chandelier, whitewashed furniture, and pink curtains add final shabby chic touches

This bedroom manages to be both dramatic and elegantly muted. The scheme pairs the traditional – notably, the curtains – with modern elements, including glistening surfaces. A large painting by Ghada Amer hangs above the bed, while a comfortable headboard continues the cream palette.

The attic of Kate Earl’s charming 1920s chalet in the French Alps is the children’s domain, and every bit as thought through and sophisticated as the rest of the house, yet fun. Up there is this tiny second bedroom, with one bed ingeniously built in under another, in an L-shape configuration under painted-pine ceilings.

Open-plan living is made cosy with warm touches to this mews house in London owned by designer Caroline Riddell. Upstairs in Caroline’s daughter’s bedroom, ‘Vertical Stripe’ wallpaper from Timorous Beasties lines the walls, adding to the fun blue-and-white scheme. A blue velvet headboard, along with various textiles, creates a cosy feel in this small space.

Combining classical proportions and traditional furnishings with the informal elements of family life, this house in has proved the perfect acquisition for its owners. Before moving in, they asked the interior designer, architectural historian and natural paint expert Edward Bulmer for his help. ‘Edward has a marvellous eye,’ says the owner. He has a great feel for colour and he is fantastic at arranging furniture and pictures.’ For his part, Edward says that these are delightful clients, and are unusually united on aesthetic decisions. Despite their very different backgrounds, they share a taste for the modest grandeur of English country-house style, for antique rugs, traditional chintz and books. The wall is painted in ‘Ochre’ from Edward Bulmer Natural Paints.

A traditional style, like the British colonial look shown here, doesn’t have to be stuffy. A few shots of color, interesting artwork and accessories, and a pretty upholstered headboard give this classic look fresh sensibilities. Plus, leaning a large mirror against the wall is a great way to add visual size to a small room.

wow, thanks for this post. I like the one with the stairs. It’s almost the same picture I have in mind years ago but never given a chance to have it in real picture. Anyway, happy to drop by and see your posts.

Decorating with multiple colours can be an intimidating task for even the most seasoned of designers. No matter how genuine our initial enthusiasm for venturing across to the other side of the paint chart, it is all too easy to get cold feet and talk ourselves out of being more courageous with colour, settling instead for safe, neutral schemes. Colour, however, shouldn’t be used exclusively to make a statement. Gabby Deeming set herself the challenge of creating four palettes from the Mylands paint range. Each palette is made up of four shades that would sit together harmoniously in a space, and work beautifully with textiles and wallpapers. The walls are painted in ‘Piccadilly’ and ‘Palmerston Pink’, £34.66 for 2.5 litres matt emulsion, while the floor is in ‘Honest John’, £21.65 for 1 litre water-based eggshell, all from Mylands.

i’m 13 and really dont like any of them some are really childish because teens want there bedrooms to look older by the way i’m not being rude its just what i think and the rest are just horrid yuck ew

If like this bedroom you have low ceilings, don’t be fooled into thinking you need to paint the whole room a bright white. A contrasting lighter colour on the ceiling can actually increase the feeling of height. This dark blue feature wall looks fantastic with the white washed floors and cream and blue textiles. No room for a bedside lamp? Steal this clever trick of low hanging ceiling lights instead.

The lovely Pickwell Manor in North Devon has given us some serious interiors inspiration: a grand sleigh bed, heavy dark wood combined with antique pale green and floral details. It’s traditional in the best possible way.

Hi Alexandrea, I am a teen as well. I post a lot of DIY videos on my youtube page if you want to check those out(my page is called madzilla101)! I just did some of the DIY projects on this page in my bedroom as well with a ton of other ones. You should check it out!

An eclectic mix of styles doesn’t have to take up much room – in fact, sometimes a small space really highlights a wonderful blend of décor. This tiny bedroom, for example, combines Asian, retro, and rustic touches for a result that’s huge in personality and style. Another great tip for a small master bedroom: instead of bedside lamps, save space with pendant lights.

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there. The furniture in this bedroom was sourced from local antiques shops and markets. Raoul Textiles ‘Mahatma’ design was used for the curtains, with the armchair upholstered in Kathryn M Ireland’s ‘Ikat Stripe’ and amps from Vaughan add another layer of pattern.

In Louise Jones’ cottage the spare bedroom curtains are Bennison Fabrics’ ‘Apple Blossom’ and the wallpaper is ‘Persian Rose’ from George Spencer Designs. A day bed upholstered in cream linen doubles as a sofa.

Young adults are hard to please so give them lots of input. Provide plenty of storage so there’s no excuse for mess, and make sure they have a good study area. Invest in a trundle bed for those sleepover parties, and let them keep their favourite accessories on display in mounted box shelves.

A unique chest of drawers with a sketch of a columned building livens up the bedside in this London home designed by Freddy van Zevenbergen. Freddy says the owner ‘wanted it to feel a bit like Loulou’s,’ Robin Birley’s louche-luxe private members’ club in Mayfair, which Lambart & Browne designed in 2012.

A charming mix of antique textiles and a curtainless four-poster bed designed by Max Rollitt, make up the focal point of this London bedroom. Find a similar bedspread at the Antique Textiles Company or commission Cassandra Ellis to design and make one bespoke.

Your choice of headboard can really set the tone for the style of the room. This quirky, black armchair-style board is complemented with unique lighting and furniture, and almost unexpected pops of colour.

But you can create a dedicated dressing area in a small bedroom, too. Use a decorative dressing screen to separate off one corner of the room, keeping a clothes rail behind it, as well as your dressing table if space allows.

Flowers have long been a staple in girls’ rooms. Keep with tradition, but modernize the look with bright colors and fun prints. Here, pumpkin oranges mix with vibrant shades of violet. Walls and pillows are accented with graphic flowers. For another modern twist, polka-dot sheer curtains contrast the girly florals.

I wanted this nursery to be a tranquil yet timeless space. The combination of subtle greys, soft pinks and white furniture is timeless and effortlessly stylish and ensures longevity. Taking inspiration from the vintage wallpaper tree art, I have accented this with brighter pinks and lime greens to punctuate the scheme and add freshness. The cotton curtains, have a playful embroidered band across the bottom featuring cats and birds, adding interest and fun to the scheme and contrasting well with the brighter pink linen blind. There is a useful mix of both open and closed storage. Contemporary pieces (such as the bunny nightlight and the grey acrylic storage stool) are mixed with vintage finds (including the wallpaper used for the tree and the antique children’s books) to create a unique room and one that complements the rest of the home. A sweet sanctuary.

A small sofa with a bullion fringe sits at the end of the bed in the main bedroom at Ugbrooke Park – the four poster bed similarly has a fringed pelmet. The colour scheme of yellow with blue & white is consistently used throughout this bedroom’s design, creating a bright and cheery space.

Interior designer Virginia Howard had no intention of moving from Knightsbridge to Pimlico, until a balcony flat in a nineteenth-century garden square changed her mind. The bedroom is decorated in a pale green colour scheme. The elegant, Grade II-listed stucco building overlooks the garden square in central London, bringing the outside in. Two meagre bedrooms were knocked into one generous one, filled with light from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

• The proven fact that women and girls generally adore multi colors ideas in decorating their bedrooms, they like to use brilliant colours and lot of ornaments, as these colors give youthful sensation and female aspect in the girls’ bedrooms decorating ideas.

When done right, black wall paint can make a chic statement in your sleep space. The trick? Paint one wall black and leave the others a bright white, then fill your room with colorful decor in fun patterns and textures.

Ideally, a bedroom should be a clean, minimal space for you to unwind in, but I also love how creativity has crept into this Scandi interior. Full of personality, this scrapbook/shelving arrangement complements the DIY aesthetic of the room and accompanies the hanging bulb light fixture perfectly. Framed pictures are non-existent but instead, a quick fix of inspirational imagery taped to the wall is the ultimate effortless decorative feature. consider their room as more than just a sleeping space. As they begin exploring their independence, having a room where they can hang out, study and lounge with friends is almost more important to them than sleep. And the social aspect of a room is big. A survey of global teenagers by smartgirl.org found that the #1 thing a teen would add to their room is a poster of themselves with their friends. Work with your teen to creatively address the following areas in their room:

‘We loved the cool, pared-down style of a house belonging to a Swedish art collector, which we had seen in a magazine,’ say the owners of this west-London terrace home. Enter Hugh Leslie whose unmistakable style gradually evolved the house into a smart family home. At the front of the house on the first floor is the pretty, generously proportioned main bedroom. Its walls are lined with the same buff-pink linen (‘Prelle Toile Barbare’ fabric by Alton Brooke) as the pelmets and the curtains, which adds an extra touch of glamour to the room. Behind it is the en-suite bathroom, with simple panelling, hand-built units and a walk-in shower lined in teak, which feels a bit like entering a first-class compartment on a vintage train.

Your daughter’s nightly homework assignments will grow right along with her. Every school-age child needs a desk for study time. The simple desk fronted by a large bulletin board shown here is the perfect spot to study. But what really makes this room special is the adorable wall décor – and it’s a snap to duplicate. Just fill in the space over the headboard with a colorful and wonderfully patterned wallpaper. It’s an easy DIY, and you’ll probably only need one roll of paper.

Floorboards of Baltic pine were laid throughout the first floor of Robin Muir’s house designed by Caroline Holdaway, including this spare bedroom. The room’s vibrant features include a black-and-white striped rug and The Rug Company’s Vivienne Westwood cushion. Similar tongue-and-groove panelling to that on the walls is available from The English Panelling Company.

Even if your bedroom is small, it’s still possible to create an interesting space. This is why I love this image, as the headboard on the bed is unique and fun, and creates a real focal point. It’s a DIY project that simply needs some panels of wood and a jigsaw to cut the shape. I love how they’ve added washi tape and some images to it – meaning you can add personality, and can easily change these as the mood takes you. They’ve tied the look together subtly with the neon pink touches, but keeping the rest of the colour palette simple. Image credit

The brief for this Paris bedroom was suitably intangible: she asked to be transported into another world. For decorator Jorge Estevez, who specialises in painting, it was vital his decorations were subtle so she wouldn’t tire of them, and also that there was ‘a feeling of the walls having been there before her’. The result is blissfully peaceful: in the bedroom, rough, eggshell-grey walls are painted with the most delicate of details to provide interest, and barely there friezes frame the doorway. The bedhead was made from an old door found in Brussels.

The interior of this eco ‘dwelle-ing’ is flooded with natural light thanks to skylights, glass doors and windows. The effect is intensified in this garden room by white walls and a neutral colour palette (see our white room ideas and how to use white paint). Enough space is created on a mezzanine level for a bedroom and workspace, with a kitchen underneath.

Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park in Sussex. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This spare bedroom on the second floor has a four-poster canopy bed and moulded fireplace in keeping with the manor’s Jacobean look.

With the distressed wood of the floor and walls, this room needs little else to give it character and warmth. Netural tones, natural textures and a touch of colour from a pretty patterned bed spread are a subtle but welcome addition.

Having moved from a Georgian manor, Clare Agnew reworked the conversion of a 300-year-old barn in Norfolk to create a secluded home for her family, in which the inside works in harmony with the garden and the marshland beyond.

Combining classical proportions and traditional furnishings with the informal elements of family life, this house in Cornwall has proved to be the perfect acquisition for its owners. In the past 100 years, the house has been a hotel and a Christian refuge, and even divided into flats. Despite these changes of use and fortune, it has survived intact, complete with its marble chimneypieces, panelled doors and acanthus cornices.

Create a simple canopy without a four-poster. Measure a piece of fabric to suspend over the length and width of the bed. Sew (or use fusible web) side panels along the corners of the fabric. Suspend over the corners of the bed with hooks screwed into the ceiling.

This compact children’s room is brightened up with soft pink walls, while the dark wooden beams add definition as well as providing natural shelving. White furniture is ideal for giving the impression of more space in a small scheme.

Choose different shades of white and cream as a base colour for a girl’s bedroom. You can then accessorise with shots of colour. Then, as your child grows, the style of the room can be easily changed.

Ok, so…I have a small room. How many teenagers do YOU know that has these gigantic elegant hardcore expensive rooms??!! I know NO ONE who has a giant room. My living room is like size of some of these rooms. Be REALISTIC.

Upstairs in the main bedroom of this farmhouse in the Chilterns hangs a collection of John Nash watercolours. ‘I love them, they represent my England; it makes me happy looking at them,’ says the owner. The magnificent Tabriz carpet is reputed to have come from the house of the poet and arts patron Edward James, West Dean in Sussex. The neutral walls allow pieces such as the bold Tabriz carpet and dark wood chest to take centre stage.

Originally Rita’s room before the expansion of her London flat, this single spare bedroom would make a wonderful kid’s room thanks to its unique and quirky design. The curtains are in ‘Broadcloth’ felt from Hainsworth and the walls are lined in Tyler Hall’s ‘First Bloom’ wallpaper from Tissus d’Hélène, with a Guatemalan tapestry that Phil brought back from his travels.

Hi! I’m only 11, but we are moving in like two weeks, and I really want to know what to put in my room. This has been a great inspiration for me, and I really like this site!! Look to your attic for space to grow, like in this little girl’s bedroom design. If a remodel is involved, tailor the basics of the room to suit your home’s style. For example, if you have a farmhouse, use warm, rustic wood on the walls and floor. That way, the space will blend seamlessly with the rest of the home should it be used for another purpose down the road.

Teens love spending time in their rooms because they feel safe and comfortable. Naturally drawn to feel-good fabrics and textures, be sure to add some touchy-feely elements in a room. Some ideas include:

Heidi Lightfoot and Steve Gibbons wanted a mid-century house and found this Thirties house in rural Hertfordshire. Built in 1936 by the renowned public sector architect Mary Medd, Sewell’s Orchard was apparently unpopular with the locals at the time, who likened its monopitch roof and pared-back design to that of a factory. This neutral spare room is brightened up with the addition of prints and a lively geometric blanket.

Flea market lamps are one of the most affordable ways to add one-of-a-kind lighting to a tween girl’s room. Although found with a beige shade for $25, this brass lamp was updated with a black paper shade picked up at a big-box retailer for less than $15.

Listen. I’m seventeen and frankly I don’t know anyone my age who’d actually like one of these rooms (no offense). They all just seem so busy and cluttered. I admit, the loft is totally awesome and having a bathroom in my room would be a dream come true, but next time, try designing something more simplier. That way the teen can decorate it with things THEY like. Sorry for the harsh criticism. ?

Baby nurseries don’t have to be swathed in pastels and animal motifs. For a more sophisticated look, start with a foundation of warm and soothing grays, and use geometric or abstract patterns. In this nursery, a single pattern on the window treatments and bed skirt furthers the minimalist vibe. Look for ways to take advantage of every nook in a kid’s rooms. Here, a changing table tucks perfectly into a small alcove, leaving more available floor space.

The bedroom of decorator Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler is quintessentially English in both its gentle antique style and its ‘make do and mend’ execution. ‘The bedhead is covered in an ancient patchwork made from my mother’s old dresses. I originally used it as a tablecloth,’ she says. ‘For me the bedroom is as important as the sitting room; it is a place of refuge that I use for resting and reading. I like to fill it with books, pictures and armchairs. I’ve kept a feeling of softness by using a very subtle stippling effect on the walls, and some translucent blinds from Chelsea Textiles under the curtains, which allow a diffuse light into the room. My linen is from Volga Linen.’

Velvet cushions and a spray-lacquered Danish desk from Ebay add to the blue theme, while the Zak + Fox fabric on the headboard provides a strong contrast. Animal motifs and a small workspace make this a perfect kid’s bedroom.
