When designing a bedroom, the most obvious place to start is with the bed. After all, without a good bed, it’s difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Make sure you choose the right size bed for the size of your bedroom. A super king size bed will dominate a small bedroom, making it difficult to move around the space or fit in any other bedroom furniture, while a standard double bed might look a bit lost a large bedroom. Measure your bedroom, and make sure the bed you choose will allow for at least 70cm of circulation space around the sides and end of the bed.
This Parisian loft features ‘Floating Armchair’ by David Hodkinson for Red Edition in the centre of the playroom. The design makes good use of the small space with playful hanging components on the wall, a blackboard that is both useful and decorative and a snug day bed tucked under the eaves. White walls welcome natural light into the small bedroom, which is important in a loft conversion. The clean, white wooden floors give the room a more spacious feel, in keeping with the clean lines of the Scandinavian-style armchair.
An archway was built to frame French windows that allow light to pour into a teal-coloured bedroom full of Moroccan treasures in Vanessa Branson’s 28-bedroom Marrakech riad hotel El Fenn, where artwork inhabits every wall.
Tweens are notorious for being a fan of one thing one week to totally flipping and loving something else the next. Shelving and under-bed storage leave room for them to store things until they’re cool again.
Grey walls contrast elegantly with a wooden four-poster bed hung with a cream linen in this scheme, where simplicity and luxury are the name of the game. A Colefax & Fowler table lamp complements the soft grey wall paint, while the bed’s cream linen is echoed by the curtains. A sofa at the foot of the bed emphasises comfort.

If space is at a premium in your little one’s room, try pushing the bed against a wall. With the bed out of the way, she’ll have plenty of play space on the floor—which will also prevent toys from cluttering up your living spaces. An upholstered queen-size headboard along the bedside creates the look of a daybed and keeps kids safe from rolling between the bed and the wall while they sleep.
Wall stickers are a great way to add a little personality to a child’s bedroom; they are also by no means permanent so once your child outgrows this charming woodland tea party theme it’s easy and inexpensive to make changes, without damaging walls.
When decorating my own home, my furniture picks have been dictated by my shoestring budget. This hasn’t stopped me having big ideas for my bedroom. I’ve just had to be style savvy – picking up vintage finds for next to nothing. I always start with soft grey painted walls, then – my tip – is to paint all my furniture in the same colour so they match – helpful when you are dressing your room with higgledy-piggledy junk shop finds. I’m not adverse to modern designs, in fact I think they are key to stopping a budget home looking to retro or fuddy-duddy. That is why I love statement lighting as it brings a modern twist to an eclectic look. The best bit about doing up a vintage home is these purchases don’t break the bank, and with a bit of hard work can look amazing. And if you tire of it, you can sell it and buy something new – this suits me down to the ground as my bedroom style is always changing. Image credit

The main bedroom of this London flat is particularly sumptuous, with its flower-trail Braquenié wallpaper, figured cotton Fortuny bedspread and strawberry-silk cushions – a lesson in how to make a potentially gloomy space glow (the space was a former Victorian hospital building). The flat is the work of antiques dealer and interior designer Max Rollitt, who found the bird pictures hung above the bed in an antiques shop. If you don’t have the same eagle eye, try reproduction prints from Surface View. Dimensions and prices vary for each print, but start roughly at 90 x 60cm and £175.
Young adults are hard to please so give them lots of input. Provide plenty of storage so there’s no excuse for mess, and make sure they have a good study area. Invest in a trundle bed for those sleepover parties, and let them keep their favourite accessories on display in mounted box shelves.
The furniture was found at Swoon Editions, including the low, mid-century modern rosewood media unit and bedside table. The bedding was bought from Anthropologie and the lighting from Urban Cottage Industries.
