I love the calming and clean atmosphere this space has, which I think is really important for a child’s room. As a Mid Century design geek I love the simple wooden mobile hanging above the cot, the print of the wolf cub matches the earthy tones of the wood and cushion perfectly. I also love the idea of having photography of baby animals in a kid’s room, its just the right amount of cuteness whilst still feeling a little grown up. I’m a big fan of Middle eastern textiles and I really like the slight juxtaposition of the candy coloured persian rug and monochrome block printed throw. I chose this image as it has a great balance of mature style with cute elements and I think a room like this could be easily adapted as the child grows up. Image Credit

This attic bedroom in west London designed by Hackett Holland is proof that you can make any awkward space stylish. It features London street map wallpaper and a sweet reading nook with a porthole window through which to gaze out (pictured out of shot, see it up close here).

During the initial design stages we find it interesting to focus on one key piece and use its colours, look and feel as a starting point for inspiration – this could be anything from a statement painting to an antique rug. Image credit

The furniture was found at Swoon Editions, including the low, mid-century modern rosewood media unit and bedside table. The bedding was bought from Anthropologie and the lighting from Urban Cottage Industries.

All-out glamour, drama and expensive tastes: if that sounds like you (even if your budget is actually small), then you’ll drool over this tiny, perfect, luxe bedroom from RSVP Design Services. What makes it work? The limited color scheme, the reflections from the mirrors and metallics, and the lack of clutter. Perfect.

Born in America, interior designer Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay started her working life in New York, cutting her visual teeth as a fashion stylist on Elle magazine, before becoming art director for some of Manhattan’s most celebrated retailers, including Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s. Her stylist’s eye has remained one of her undoubted assets, giving her the confidence to compose sophisticated medleys of pattern, colour and texture. ‘In this house, we definitely went maximalist,’ she says. ‘We used layer upon layer.’ The wallpapers are ‘Clouds Sonic’ by Aimée Wilder and ‘Tile’ by Cole & Son, while the ‘Libra’ zodiac cushion is from Jonathan Adler.

This cosy bedroom at Soho Farmhouse features green floral wallpaper, creating a countryside feel. Matching curtains form a cosy canopy around the four-poster bed. This design is ideal for a small space.

The spare bedroom of interior designer Diana Sieff’s home (a converted chapel in Oxfordshire) has a vintage chic look, with a trio Lebanese plates hanging on the wall. ‘Isfahan’ porcelain plates by OKA, £179 for a set of four, would create a similar look.

An architecturally significant building from the Fifties by Victor Gruen (the architect who invented the shopping mall), the owners wanted to retain the period character by filling it with classic mid-century pieces. ‘These houses are often furnished with Eames and Mies ven der Rohe, which is just too obvious. While the house, and the furniture I have used in it are historical, I never want the space to feel like a museum,’ he says. ‘I want to stay true to the period, but reframe it for today; the mood now is fresher, softer, more subtle and subdued.’

A school uniform chair would be a truly special feature for any child or teenager’s room – uniform, sports kit, brownies, cubs, a favourite party dress, any outfit can become an eye-catching piece of furniture with a little imagination. Here, I used a digital fabric design and combined it onto my favourite style of armchair. This would work equally well on any style of chair, sofa or interior furnishing! I think this is a wonderfully quirky design that features a fabulous twist on a special part of your child or teenager’s life, making sure that the memories of happiest years live on forever… Custom-designed chairs, lampshades, cushions and wallpaper designs are a fantastic edition to any child’s bedroom and provide high quality, extremely comfortable pieces that will make your bedroom design truly unique and memorable.

This bedroom is within the Cotswolds home of architect Richard Parr. The chest of drawers from Bryanmawr Furniture Makers, is made from oak and compliments the simple, yet timeless feel of the bedroom. The Fifties Italian vintage shield mirror hung over the bed was bought from The Cabinet Rooms a pop-up auction with great mid-century-modern pieces.

Vincent Frey is the grandson of the eponymous Pierre Frey founder (and the current deputy manager of the French fabric and furnishing company). Vincent and his wife Bianca hired architect Marika Dru, an old school friend of Vincent’s, to work on their Parisian flat, although decided to decorate it – including son Vasco’s room – themselves. We love the mix of a grand painting with a quirky hanging basket.

In the spare bedroom of Caroline Holdaway’s cottage, an olive-stripe flatweave rug from Sinclair Till contrasts with a vibrant tartan rug from Toast used as a bedspread and cushions made from fabric pieces left over from projects.

The interior of this eco ‘dwelle-ing’ is flooded with natural light thanks to skylights, glass doors and windows. The effect is intensified in this garden room by white walls and a neutral colour palette (see our white room ideas and how to use white paint). Enough space is created on a mezzanine level for a bedroom and workspace, with a kitchen underneath.

A good mattress is even more important than the bed it sits on. Take time to choose the right one for you, trying it out in-store if possible, and lying on it in various different positions. Whether you go for an innerspring mattress, memory foam mattress, or anything in between, it pays to invest in a well-made model. A top quality mattress should keep its shape for at least eight years. Check out our guide to the best mattresses.

Every room needs a splash of pattern. In this trendy pre-teen room, an accent of cheerful lavender wallpaper pops perfectly against crisp white furniture and built-ins. The pattern is repeated in the window coverings in the room. Colorful pillows and bedding pull in more colors from the girl’s bedroom wallpaper and tie the color scheme together. Finally, the area rug packs the last punch in this busy, but cohesive room. With wallpaper and patterns as fun as this, there’s no need for girl’s bedroom wall decor.

Hitting the books might be a chore, but in a room as fun as this, homework time just might get a little easier. A large desk and office chair, with storage bins beneath, create a work zone. But when it’s time for fun, ample seating, a fun color scheme, and whimsical touches turn this room into a space for giggling with friends.

Simple finishes provide a backdrop for the collection of modern art in this Victorian town house in west London. The owners chose architect Seth Stein, who is known for his masterly paring back of historic buildings. The colour in the main bedroom comes from a seventeenth-century tapestry on the wall, along with the pair of armchairs upholstered in vivid blue mohair from Kvadrat.

This bedroom is within a newbuild in California decorated by David Bentheim. A modern iron four poster bed is draped with a linen-covered duvet, wool blanket and monogrammed cushions. The colour scheme is kept calm and bright with white walls and painted panelled ceiling, Crittall-style french doors and window are both covered with soft grey roman blinds. A crystal chandelier adds the slightest touch of glam.

Inspiration for a soft and elegant room design is easy to display with floral print bedding. Pick out a fun daisy print on a duvet cover and shams to add some cheer to your space. Bring out the colors of your bedding by using the complementary sheet sets we have available. Placing rugs around the floor softens the overall look and feel within the room. Adding golden finished lamps and chairs brings a cool finishing touch of glamour to your space.

Shoe horning three children into one bedroom is no mean feat and to pull it off this stylishly is quite a challenge. Three boys inhabit this small room; each has his own super cool platform bed suspended from ropes at differing levels, an individual wall light and artworks adorning their space. A colour palette of earthy grey looks wonderful teamed with natural wood and uplifting warm yellow. Every bed is identically dressed in crisp white linen and highlighted with a textural grey blanket and accented yellow cushion. Each child has an equal portion of the room so sharing should be a joy and not a trial. In fact, I can quite imagine these boys enjoying bed swapping every night! My top tips would be that when furnishing a small room, limit your palette of colours and materials – using too many will visually clutter a room and make it feel much smaller. The adage “less is more” is so true! Also, wall mounting furniture makes a room feel bigger – it’s all about being able to see under and around things that tricks the eye into thinking a space is bigger than it really is. Image Credit
