Even when the day is pure chaos, your bedroom is the one place where you should always be able to go and regroup — no kids, no electronics (although they usually find a way to force themselves in anyway). Still, you can at least give yourself home court advantage by choosing decor you love. These easy, inexpensive ideas should be a good start…

If you’ve ever stepped foot into the typical teenage girl’s bedroom, you know that the floor generally becomes a wardrobe wasteland of apocalyptic proportions. Functional organization methods like closet organizers can help, but to truly encourage keeping tidy, try making storage a focal point. Shelves like these turn picking up shoes into a design element, making cleaning up that much more rewarding. This is exceptionally beneficial in a smaller room where every inch of storage space counts, as a bare wall doesn’t provide much utility, and open shelving makes the area feel a bit larger than a looming wardrobe would.

Although the internet and home decorating magazines are great resources for girls room designs, ideas and pictures for this space can be found in unexpected places. Get inspiration from childhood story books, your daughter’s favorite movie, or even popular television shows. However the best, and most important resource for unique girls room design ideas such as castle themes, Barbie decorations, or mermaid inspired décor, will be your daughter herself. Regardless of how old she is, most young girls will have some sort of preference towards what is put in their room, whether it be for the color you paint the walls, the art you hang on the walls, or the covers you put on the bed. So try to involve your daughter in the decoration process by having her look at online pictures of kids rooms with you, tag along with you while you search department stores for childrens bedding, or even come with you to the home improvement store to find paint samples. With her help you will be able to make your little girls room makeover a fun and exciting task.

This bedroom resides in a period home with high ceilings, classically inspired mouldings and beautiful parquet flooring. As if that isn’t enough, it’s filled with a mixture of mid-century furniture and lighting, breathtaking art and a sophisticated and restrained colour palette. For me it is the embodiment of ‘timelessness’. It will look as good in ten or twenty years time, just as it wouldn’t have looked out of place thirty years ago. It’s also impossible to tell if the owner is male of female. Another sign of simple good taste. And yet, it’s no museum piece, and has all the attributes of a comfortable and restorative bedroom. The pillows are plump and smooth. There’s an extra wool blanket to ward off winter chills. There’s a warm rug for bare feet, and the reading lights are positioned just where they are most effective. There’s even candles handy for when the mood dictates. If I was to add anything, it might be a padded headboard, but then the artwork wouldn’t be centre stage. That’s another word for this room. This is a bedroom we designed for Jaeden. It’s my favourite because it was transformed from a dull, and dark room to a bright, fresh and fun space! The room has subtle educational elements such as coloured 3D numbers and the hexagonal shaped shelving. During installation, Jaeden who was 3 at the time, learnt what a hexagon was. The book ledges are great for easy access to his books. He was fascinated by the monkeys which hung over his bed and referred to them as ‘monkeys jumping on the bed’. The room is practical with a trundle bed for future sleepovers. It has the quirky Kartell Componibili storage which acts as a bedside table. The walls are a neutral blue/grey that creates the perfect canvas for the pops of colour or allows for an easy makeover by changing the soft furnishings.

It’s always so nice to refresh your space in little ways. You did such a good job. I love what you’ve done with the room in general. I’m actually obsessed with palette headboards my boyfriend is in the process of making us a smaller one, but repurposing it into a bed frame was a great idea. It looks awesome.

Kids are a great joy of family life, but one thing that can be difficult is decorating a bedroom of someone that grows so quickly before your eyes! I’m really big on gender neutral design and looking at this room, you wouldn’t be able to tell whether or not it belonged to a girl or a boy. It’s so bright and natural with bits of contemporary and Scandinavian design. Little elements like the blackboard, bean bags and lights are used to give the room a warm feeling even though the design is really simple. I love where the bed is placed in the corner by a large window too.  My top tip for decorating kids bedrooms is to maximise storage and to keep things simple, kids change their mind and get bored of a lot of things very quickly, we’ve all been there! A ranging color palette might otherwise overwhelm a room, but done in a funky way like this, a bevy of colors is more quirky than overpowering. The progression along the color gradient from fully saturated to white contributes to this virtue, a technique easily replicated by mixing in increasing amounts of white paint as you move down the wall.

It might be tempting to buy the biggest bed possible to feather a luxurious nest. But doing this in a small space tends to cause a more cramped feel. Instead, choose a bed with small stature that won’t choke the room, such as an iron bed with a see-through headboard and footboard. Or pick a bed with no footboard at all, such as a platform or storage bed. Doing so will keep the middle of your room open, making it feel larger.

For a designer-worthy look, choose a simple color palette of three to four neutral hues and a single, bright accent color like the eye-catching pink in this chic bedroom. Add interest with a variety of bold, trendy patterns and cozy textures like cotton, faux fur, knits, etc.
