The concrete floors and exposed brick painted in white may create a cool warehouse feel but the nonchalantly styled books and pictures, as well as the texured bedding and soft throws keep the scheme from being sterile.

There can be few House & Garden readers who are unfamiliar with the cult names and sought-after colours of the Farrow & Ball paint chart. Friends and business partners Martin Ephson and Tom Helme, the men responsible for planting it firmly in the nation’s consciousness, sold the company in 2006, and have since launched textiles company Fermoie. House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming created a pretty scheme using their fabrics. The padded headboard, upholstered in the ‘Rabanna’ cotton is from Fafio, while the sofa and chair are both from Howe.

In the daughter’s bedroom of a west London house, the ceiling has been painted to look like a circus tent, using Farrow & Ball’s ‘Rectory Red’ and Paint and Paper Library’s ‘Slate I’. The addition of a large basement extension to the house has freed up space on the upper floors for bright and capacious rooms, and a more fluid layout, ideal for family living.

In this children’s bedroom in Paris – its elegance quite unlike any other child’s bedroom – the walls are adorned with painted medallions hanging on beaded strings. Each medallion contains a motif, a religious icon or mythical creature, which ‘watch over’ the children as they sleep. The medallions are by Jorge Estevez – who claims he is a decorator, and not an artist.

Today’s teenagers design-conscious and up to date on the latest trends. But they’re torn between childhood and adulthood. Most teens have beloved toys they’re not ready to give up, but look for a room that’s older and more sophisticated than their childhood room.

Tongue-and-groove panelling adds New England-style charm to the spare room (in what used to be the butler’s pantry) of this 1830s London house restored to its original style by interior designer Max Rollitt. The touch of a chair used in place of a traditional nightstand is particularly charming.

  1. Most people want their bedroom to be a soothing, restorative retreat. If that’s your goal, then consider green and white for your palette. Add in botanical touches in the bedding, as in the room from Viscusi Elson Interior Design shown here, along with a showstopper sunburst mirror, stylish Roman shades, and cottage-casual white furniture, and the result is a room that calms your mind and refreshes your senses. Beautiful.
When renovating this Renovated Farmhouse, Maria Speake of Retrovious kept an eye out for continuity between rooms. For example, here in the spare room the walls are lined with ‘Sheep’ wallpaper from The Art of Wallpaper thus echoing the animal theme of the children’s bathroom.
The guest bedroom in Argentinian architect Mario Connio’s Andalucian farmhouse once housed a bread oven. Now it is painted a beautiful cornflower blue that enhances the relaxed Mediterranean feel of the room.
Even better, use sleek, contemporary built-ins for additional storage. Built-ins maximize storage while looking like they’re not even there. A good built-in around your bed creates a cozy sleeping nook while adding plenty of storage.
