A mix of contemporary and period furniture styles are pulled together by an aged apple green wall colour that is both modern and yet has vintage appeal. Combined with a statement rug and abstract wall art, the result is eclectic but extremely elegant.

The canopy in this girl’s bedroom, designed by Studio Alidad, was intended to make it feel more ‘feminine and special’. The bespoke floral design on the headboard and silk fringe is repeated on the fabric wallcovering, while the ceiling and corona are hand-painted.

Bedrooms should be tranquil and relaxing! When I redecorated mine, I chose a very pale grey wall colour with matching bed linen and curtains! I hung my floor-length curtains high up on the wall, and to the sides of the window frames to create the illusion of height and larger windows. This maximises the light coming in to the room, and together with the white painted wooden floor, gives the room a calm and airy feel. I kept the decor fuss free, just adding different patterned textiles in the same colours for some visual interest, and warmed up the look by adding some copper accessories. A light chain and some industrial style cage lights either side of the bed gives a cosy glow at night and my bedtime reading supply (interior magazines) are kept handy by the bed and doubles up as a bedside table! Greens and blues are a soothing choice, as they help to relax body and mind, particularly when used in paler tones. That said, dark colours such as warm grey, midnight blue or even black can create an intimate, cosseting feel that’s perfect for a bedroom. A white bedroom scheme, on the other hand, has a light, carefree feel that can help you to unwind at the end of a busy day.

Define each area with a clear purpose, so that every inch of space works hard. Here, a desk doubles up as a dressing table with built-in drawers and three pretty mirrors. This clever trundle bed is perfect for weekend sleepovers!

For me, the bedroom is a space that needs to be calming, simple and light. I hate clutter around me when I want to sleep so the minimalism of this room appeals to me. I also want my bedroom to be as bright as possible in the morning to motivate me at the start of the day, so the white walls, bedlinen and the painted floor are the perfect combination as they allow the light to bounce around the room. I love the natural touches of the bulbs, the raw wood of the bedside table, the baskets by the fireplace and the beautiful crocheted blanket, which add touches of character to the room. This room is the perfect blank canvas for rest and relaxation. Image credit

Faringdon House in Oxfordshire was once home to ‘the mad boy’ Lord Berners, the inspiration for Lord Merlin in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. Now in the hands of his descendant Sofka Zinovieff, the character and of the home and its history is lovingly preserved.

This gorgeous girl’s room has hand painted, full room wall mural with wooden floors. The atmosphere in this room is enough to give wings to the imagination to your little fairy. I won’t be surprised to find her in the land of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, fast asleep in the garden, waiting for her prince. The traditional bed and the furniture enhance the mystic feel of the atmosphere.

The colours are peaceful and pleasant, as they are throughout the house. ‘Above all, I wanted the colours to be calm; this pale colour palette makes a narrow house seem less claustrophobic and fussy, and meant that I could add pattern through the other textiles.’

Paired with white furniture, bedding and accessories, teal wall paint makes a chic splash in this cozy retreat. A wall-mounted flat screen TV is blended into a gallery wall for a design that’s both stylish and functional.

The main bedroom of this Richmond mansion flat designed by Johnny Holland of Hackett Holland is decorated in dark colours to exaggerate its cosiness while the range of textures create a feeling of luxury. One corner has been hived off to form a walk-in wardrobe, which is papered with a tropical Ananbô wallpaper and overlaid with a grid of panelling to give it added depth.

Have scrap wood going spare? Upcycle it into a new piece of furniture as a bedroom idea. The bed in this spare room, made from wooden mooring posts from Venice, was Anne-Marie Midy’s grandmother’s. Along with husband Jorge Almada, Anne-Marie owns design company Casamidy which sells furniture and accessories. The couple live in Brussels with their two young sons.

In the main bedroom of this Chelsea family home designed by Turner Pocock, a hand-painted de Gournay silk wallpaper and an elegant chandelier sets the tone, but a pompom trim on the curtains, (‘Arrango Linen’ from Zinc Textile) adds a touch of playfulness and frivolity.

The bedroom is usually quite a simple room. The design and layout is far less complicated than a kitchen or bathroom, so you can put a lot of focus on the decoration, style and colours you’re using. Start by thinking about who will be using the bedroom. Is it you alone? With your partner? Your teenage children? That’ll set the tone for your style.

The conversion of this Victorian terrace in west London was a collaborative effort between Thomas Croft Architects, John Cullen Lighting and designer Sarah Delaney. In the main bedroom, an exotic hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper depicting oriental birds amid trees and flowers on a silver background is combined with panelling salvaged from another local house refurbishment.

My recipe for a cool children’s bedroom involves 3 main ingredients: great storage, blackboard paint and amazing lights. I love this room because it works just as well for girls as it does for boys. The rock star/monochrome theme is always age appropriate – very important because in my experience kids grow. Fast! The hip industrial vibe is den-like and softened with tactile furs, comforting checks and a cosy rug. Extra twinkling lights at ceiling height add a bit of fairytale magic and nobody grows out of sleeping under the stars, right? On the other side of this room I’d install a bank of full height cupboards to hide all the cargo that comes with every child and also has a habit of growing with them. Mini rock stars might prefer a cabin bed or bunks and some extra spots and stripes in the form of soft furnishings would provide the X factor for me. Sometimes there’s much to be gleaned from the design of a good hotel room. This one the Playa Grande Beach Club is painted in what it’s owner calls, ‘faded bathing-suit colours’, and layered with art, objects and vintage furnishings. The bed forms the focal point of a perfectly symmetrical tableau of furniture, starting with the wall mounted lamps and side tables and culminating with the bamboo sofa, coffee table and string chairs which form an appealing seating area for morning coffee and newspapers.
