With a Damien Hirst artwork and a vintage chandelier, this little girl’s room in Bayswater designed by Fiona Parke of Johnston Parke Interiors is certainly at the fancier end of the spectrum. The bed is upholstered in Abbott & Boyd linen and has two drawers for storing toys.

An industrial-inspired decor of stripped back brick walls, utilitarian style furniture and a grey colour scheme is given a kids’ room appropriate update with the addition of bold colour and fun accessories and artwork.

Tucked away in a small backstreet in Knightsbridge is the home of Tessa Kennedy, a legendary name in the world of interior design, whose work adorns Claridges and the Ritz, and whose clients include George Harrison, Elizabeth Taylor and Prince Jefri of Brunei – for whose apartment she designed a revolving drawing room. Her house is eclectic, opulent and leavened with a healthy dose of kitsch, including this spectacularly theatrical spare bedroom. The walls are painted in pale violet to match the toile on the four-poster bed, bought the Marche aux Puces in Paris.

‘The whole time we were working on this house our aim was for things not to match too much,’ says designer David Bentheim of this scheme. Juxtaposing the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, David copied original paneling that remained in an upstairs room, and installed a screen covered in de Gournay fabric behind the thoroughly modern, metal four-poster bed. Concealed within the bespoke white chest at the bed’s foot is a flat-screen television, which is raised and lowered using remote control.

How about a minimalist bedroom that will wish you sweet dreams? A bedroom that pleases your senses after a long and busy day. A space that is a balm for the soul of its residents, which creates a sense of sanctuary amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A Zen space with a subtle extravagant touch in the form of a marble wall which acts as a blank canvas for other features. There is a large walk-in wardrobe, to the right of the bed, allowing residents to keep the space nice and tidy – perhaps apart from a couple of great books laying around here and there. But who wouldn’t love to lay down on this bed with a good read? Image credit
An upholstered screen is a useful device when working with pattern as it can be moved to fill empty spaces (or hide areas such as a desk in a multi-purpose bedroom) and is relatively simple to recover when you tire of the design.
