This newbuild country house is a triumph of teamwork, with architects and designers collaborating to create the owner’s perfect home. The West Country location combines rural peace, privacy and views across fields and woodland with the convenient proximity of a main road; the architecture is a gentle mix of classical symmetry and vernacular charm; and the interior decoration matches furnishings from a previous house with new additions, including some specially commissioned pieces.

Although carpet is usually the most popular flooring choice for bedrooms, it’s hard to keep clean in high-traffic rooms. Rather than going through the motions of having carpet professionally cleaned yearly, it may be a better investment to simply replace wall-to-wall carpet with resilient vinyl plank flooring. Averaging less than $1.50 per square foot, vinyl plank is easy to install by cutting to size with a utility knife, then staggering each plank to create a pattern. As opposed to carpet, which stains easily, vinyl can simply be wiped clean with a sponge.

I love the fact that my bedroom is a comfy nook tucked under a pitched roof. To highlight the cosiness I have painted the pitched roof in a dark anthracite, that is ‘Down Pipe’ from Farrow & Ball. The atmosphere is meant to be calming and soothing. The overall colour scheme is moody with various hues of blue and grey. For that dash of boho style I’ve opted for a few houseplants around my bed and West African vintage indigo throw with a traditional pattern. It’s my favorite place to unwind from long and stressful days. Image credit

The elementary-school years… they’re a delight. No longer an infant or toddler requiring middle-of-the-night care, but not yet a teen with a corresponding attitude, the elementary-age child, for the most part, is full of fun, love and whimsy. If you have a daughter in this age category, it’s time for her to have a bedroom that reflects her status as “not a baby anymore,” yet still retains the innocence of childhood. Here are twelve ideas for decorating a bedroom that will thrill any little girl,…MORE starting with this adorable space from Chango & Co.

The reason I love this bedroom is due to its refined elegance. The simple colour palette makes for a wonderfully calming master bedroom. The classic Ralph Lauren pinstripe walls serve as the perfect backdrop for the stunning navy upholstered bed, with its many layers of cushions and throws creating a hotel-like feel. From the beautiful symmetry presented through every aspect of this room, to the many sumptuous textures, this bedroom reflects the perfect marriage of classic style with distinctive contemporary touches. Image credit

I love so much about this baby/toddler room interior. The bunting across the blind really sets a tone for the room and I love the lights hanging off of the ladder, they add a touch of warmth and cosiness to the room – which is exactly how every baby or child’s room should feel. I love that the floors and walls are bright. There’s a blue, white and grey theme which is fantastic because it suits a young baby as well as being grown up enough for a toddler. We’re re-doing our boys’ rooms this year and this image among others is where we’re taking inspiration from. I plan to use a light laminate floor like here and opt for light walls too, contrasting it by using colourful accessories. I think that when it comes to children’s interiors it’s fine to want to go modern, but it’s important to make sure that the room both reflects your child’s personality and is fun and young at the same time. A charcoal grey paint scheme may not be the first thing that springs to mind when decorating a kids’ room but with accents of yellow and blue and some age-appropriate furniture (this three bed bunk-bed is fantastic) little boys will love it. Also note the inbuilt pockets in the curtains: a sweet way to provide extra storage don’t you think?

It’s always so nice to refresh your space in little ways. You did such a good job. I love what you’ve done with the room in general. I’m actually obsessed with palette headboards my boyfriend is in the process of making us a smaller one, but repurposing it into a bed frame was a great idea. It looks awesome.

The owners of this newbuild Bahamas beach house turned to trusted interior designer John McCall to provide their house with a British sensibility, practical furnishings and interiors that are not ‘too beachy’. An architecturally significant building from the Fifties by Victor Gruen (the architect who invented the shopping mall), the owners wanted to retain the period character by filling it with classic mid-century pieces. ‘These houses are often furnished with Eames and Mies ven der Rohe, which is just too obvious. While the house, and the furniture I have used in it are historical, I never want the space to feel like a museum,’ he says. ‘I want to stay true to the period, but reframe it for today; the mood now is fresher, softer, more subtle and subdued.’

When it comes to home decor and bedroom styling I like my room to depict a clean, fresh ambience and provide a good air flow. My bedroom is where I go to unwind and read and it’s important that the space correlates with my wellbeing and mood. I adore neutral coloured bedrooms, with delicate pieces of furniture and accessories. Lighting and the ambience it provides is really important and I do recommend up to three different lighting focal points within a room, ranging from ceiling lights to bedside lamps. It’s also fun to play with a variety of different lightbulbs so that you can have a choice of whether to have a bright light on or something softer to suit your mood. Cushions and throws add character to a bedroom and provide different levels of texture which can make a room fabulous. I’m very fond of shabby chic furniture in a bedroom because it conveys a very romantic Parisian flair. With the correct accessories and a delicate neutral palette a glamorous shabby chic bedroom can be achieved and fabulously lived in. Image credit

Lettering on the wall and a stellar light fixture give a more youthful feel to this stylish bedroom in designer Sarah Stewart-Smith’s Herefordshire family home. It’s the little details that make this room so appealing. Storage is cleverly hidden away, while the four-poster bed tucked into the alcove is a subtle style statement. The texture on the bedspread and pop of red are the perfect finishing touches.

Love Scandinavian style? The combination of crisp whites and cheery colours lends itself well to a kids’ room. Start with white-washed floors and furnishings, then add bright pops of colour with cushions and bedding. Don’t forget quirky-yet-fun accents, like this hanging bird mobile.

Grove Lodge, the Cambridge home of Tim Knox, director of The Fitzwilliam Museum, and landscape designer Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, provides the perfect setting for the couples growing collection of artwork and curiosities. In the spare bedroom a gallery wall of antique pictures has been coupled with a brass bed-frame and gingham bedspread.

A child’s room isn’t just for sleeping in. Encourage creativity with a fun play area. Closed cupboards keep things tidy so the focus is on the important things: chalkboard drawings and artwork displayed on a handy shelf.

  1. For those who have large space to spare, it is best to design a kid’s bedroom that is as large as possible. It gives them much needed freedom and there is a far lesser chance of him bumping his head into anything. This fashionable design in Grey, white and yellow does just that.
The master bedroom of a converted disused chapel in Somerset owned by artist Jonathan Delafield Cook and illustrator Laura Stoddart is decorated in a neutral colour palette of creams and whites with blue accents provided by the bedding and cushions.
Flowers have long been a staple in girls’ rooms. Keep with tradition, but modernize the look with bright colors and fun prints. Here, pumpkin oranges mix with vibrant shades of violet. Walls and pillows are accented with graphic flowers. For another modern twist, polka-dot sheer curtains contrast the girly florals.
