The colour coral is back in vogue. According to Josephine Bennett, head of design at Laura Ashley, warm tones of sable with touches of coral give a subtle and slightly less feminine feel to this colour scheme. We like.

Colourful crate style storage can act as a fun bookcase or toy store in a kids’ room, just ensure you affix them securely to the wall. Oh, and while we’re on the wall, the clever handpainted brick paint is pretty cool too.

When it comes to children’s decor, my eye is always drawn to white, airy rooms with playful details to add warmth and colour. Jenson’s gender neutral nursery is a perfect example of this, with his sweet ladybug bedding and special wooden toys out on display. There’s space to let him play unrestricted, with stylish storage boxes to tidy away any clutter afterwards. It’s also a room that can easily grow with him for years to come. Whilst monochrome is the trend of the moment, it can be surprisingly tricky to get right. The key is to find a balance and you can do this by adding in more soft tones and textures such as wooden accents, a fun wallpaper or contrasting prints. Not only does it make the space more interesting, but it doesn’t restrict you to one overly coordinated look. Have fun with styling and sourcing your key pieces and it will shine through in your child’s room! Image Credit: Holly Nicholls from Jenson & Beau

A stunning four-poster bed will make your child feel very grown-up, modern and sophisticated, while a combination of orange, raspberry and red is a modern alternative to traditional pink. White furniture helps to keep the look uncluttered. Try Argos for a similar bed.

Colourful and quirky, everything in this room – from the red squiggle wallpaper to the animal print textiles, owl rug and paper hanging mobile – is fun, which is just what a little girl’s room should be.

Trudi Ballard, press officer of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler has decorated her elegant Marrakesh house in a combination of English country-house style with traditional Moroccan elements. A rug – a gift from a friend – brightens the scheme, while the raffia ceiling lights from Henry Cath are a unifying element that has been used in all the bedrooms. The light-filled house opens out from a courtyard with a traditionally tiled, cloistered walkway to one side from which bedrooms lead off, each with its own terrace.

Keep her stylish space organized by adding simple wall shelves. Narrow shelves in various sizes create visual interest in a bedroom and offer a simple way to showcase books, artwork and other knickknacks. Small wicker baskets provide an extra organizational element and help keep the desk clear and clutter free. Design by HGTV fan mblanchette

This bedroom in a Notting Hill townhouse is dominated by Michael Szell’s cheerful ‘Carnival’ fabric and wallpaper designed for Christopher Farr Cloth. The wall behind the bed has been entirely wallpapered, giving the effect of an extended headboard.

In this country house in Norfolk with interiors designed by Veere Grenney, the Tudor wing is a glorious honeycomb of rooms for the youngest members of the family, where there are enough small beds for the most riotous of sleepovers. Four-poster beds, working fireplaces and generous armchairs make them gloriously comfortable, but the light colour palette, the brightly coloured modern rugs and the carefully chosen pictures and objects dispel any notion of stuffiness. Yellow is a great colour choice for childrens rooms: it’s bright, playful and most importantly gender neutral.

Serena Foyle, a music designer for firework displays divides her time between her home in Edinburgh and her family’s Cadogan Square flat in London where she lives with her artist brother William. A portrait of Serena, her sister Antonia and William as children, by artist Dick Smyly, hangs in Serena’s bedroom.

We all want the same thing from our bedrooms—a sanctuary from the wear and tear of our daily lives, somewhere cosy and refreshing where we can recharge our batteries. But as one of the more private rooms in your home, this is also a place where you can indulge your individual tastes in order to create the perfect backdrop for all those nights of peaceful slumber and happy dreams. Check out some bedroom ideas & bedroom designs above!

I love the cool, calm feeling of interior stylist Pella Hedeby’s bedroom, with its abundance of natural light, crisp white linens and beautiful monochrome accents. The cladding on the wall behind the end offers the perfect framed display units for artwork and scented candles, and I always love a low console table at the foot of the bed for displaying coffee table books and keeping rows of footwear organised. Sometimes there’s much to be gleaned from the design of a good hotel room. This one the Playa Grande Beach Club is painted in what it’s owner calls, ‘faded bathing-suit colours’, and layered with art, objects and vintage furnishings. The bed forms the focal point of a perfectly symmetrical tableau of furniture, starting with the wall mounted lamps and side tables and culminating with the bamboo sofa, coffee table and string chairs which form an appealing seating area for morning coffee and newspapers.

Many people believe that a small room has to be painted white or a very pale pastel, but in reality, dark colors make the walls visually recede, increasing the perceived size of the space. And if that isn’t reason enough to consider going dark on your walls, then just take a look at the sophistication, serenity, and beauty of the deep purple walls here. Dark gray, navy or indigo blue, or dusky dark green are equally restful and lovely.

Juggling the demands of a growing family and an interior-design business, Nicole Salvesen updated her south London house to increase the feeling of space with bright colours and more streamlined rooms. Bed quilts from Molly Mahon add colour in Nicole’s daughters’ bedroom.

This spare room in the restored Cumbrian farmhouse of Annabel Lewis (owner of V V Rouleaux) has an antique canopied bed covered in toile de Jouy, with a nightstand painted in a matching hue. The unframed paintings and books piled by the bed add a relaxed look to the period features.

  1. For a designer-worthy look, choose a simple color palette of three to four neutral hues and a single, bright accent color like the eye-catching pink in this chic bedroom. Add interest with a variety of bold, trendy patterns and cozy textures like cotton, faux fur, knits, etc.
Make a classic color scheme little-girl friendly with a splash of citrus. In this traditional blue and white bedroom, fun accents of orange add pop. The major elements in the room—the wall, the bed, and the side table—are in blue so the space remains restful.
A dressing room or walk-in wardrobe is the ultimate luxury in a bedroom. It’s best to go bespoke (funds allowing), as an experienced cabinet designer will know how to make the most of every last inch of storage space, incorporating shoe racks, clothes drawers, built-in shelves, hanging rails and more.
An elegant iron daybed provides a spot for reading in the day as well as a place to sleep at night. The colourful, characterful textiles and soft toys hung from the bed and walls keep it young and fun.
