Monochrome is the among the most confident of interior styles. Inspired by the elegance of 1960s black-and-white fashion photography, it’s a style that’s endured. Here, a colourless room uses a hint of grey and asymmetry to its advantage.

Designer Mark Gillette makes careful use of colour and lighting in his flat, proving that even small spaces can handle a dark, dramatic palette of jewel-like amber offset with black and white. ‘I’m not afraid of colour, but I like to keep it contained,’ he says. The well-positioned light above the bed is useful for reading but also spotlights the white bedding, bringing light and space to the centre of the room. The clothes storage is also a clever design feature, both practical and beautiful.

For Emma Bridgewater and her husband Matthew Rice, a shared desire to preserve skills and traditions has influenced their booming ceramics business, as well as the restoration of their farmhouse and barn in Oxfordshire. As seen here, the bedroom retains the original stonework.

Born in America, interior designer Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay started her working life in New York, cutting her visual teeth as a fashion stylist on Elle magazine, before becoming art director for some of Manhattan’s most celebrated retailers, including Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s. Her stylist’s eye has remained one of her undoubted assets, giving her the confidence to compose sophisticated medleys of pattern, colour and texture. ‘In this house, we definitely went maximalist,’ she says. ‘We used layer upon layer.’ The wallpapers are ‘Clouds Sonic’ by Aimée Wilder and ‘Tile’ by Cole & Son, while the ‘Libra’ zodiac cushion is from Jonathan Adler.

A warm chocolate-brown focal wall adds an adult edge in this girl’s bedroom. To make the rich hue more playful and fitting for a young girl, HGTV fan wenbenoit integrated hot pink into the design scheme with sheer window treatments, storage ottomans and a stylish floral lamp. She kept the linens ultra-neutral to offset the bold color combination.

I wish I had designed this room – I love everything about it. The bleached natural pine floorboards and tall white walls are a perfect canvas for those pretty vintage pieces and more colourful toys. With a restrained colour palette like this, a child’s room always look stylish, no matter how messy it is. I love kids’ rooms that aren’t filled with matching furniture sets from children’s ranges. Finding meaningful, beautiful pieces gives kids’ rooms personality – it takes time, but this is how the best interiors develop, organically. Quirky details such as the hat collection add fun, whilst the unexpectedly small and contrasting orange pendant adds punch to this calm monochrome scheme. Blue patterned wallpaper creates a country feel at Soho House’sBabington House in Somerset. The roll-top baths in the bedrooms are a key design feature – they came about as the Georgian manor’s bathrooms were too small for them.

This bedroom by Samantha Pynn is my dream bedroom! The soft colour palette with the simple design gives this room such a relaxing feel, while the blue floral ceramic stool and pillows add another dimension to the room, and keep it from feeling too soft. The sheer curtains let in lots of light, keeping the room lovely and bright.

Even better, use sleek, contemporary built-ins for additional storage. Built-ins maximize storage while looking like they’re not even there. A good built-in around your bed creates a cozy sleeping nook while adding plenty of storage.

‘The approach we took to the furniture was rather like our approach to the house as a whole,’ says Jonathan Tuckey, who imaginatively modernised this seventeenth-century chalet in the Swiss Alps. ‘We really liked a lot of the things that were in the house already and decided to hang on to them. But then there were other elements that we designed specially, such as the beds which are now really close to the ground and more informal.’

The owner of this Kensington apartment is Sofia Barattieri di San Pietro, who conceived and masterminded upmarket fashion website Motilo. She wanted to create a glamorous, ‘international’ look with an art-deco flavour in her home, which she achieved with the shared vision and cultural understanding of interior designer Paolo Moschino (they are both Italian). The main bedroom is decorated mainly in cream and white, with brass accents in the bedside tables and the Fifties lamps by Maison Charles; the print above the bed is by Gary Hume. The adjoining bathroom is furnished in a similar cream and brass scheme; ‘I am so tired of chrome,’ Paolo explains.

Gray’s sedate vibe makes it especially good for the bedroom. But when decorating with gray, be sure to add plenty of interest to keep the look lovely, not grim. Take a few tips from the gorgeous room from Jean Stephane Beauchamp Design shown here; a strong area rug, an intriguing ceiling fixture, a luxurious velvet upholstered headboard, and a touch of fun in the skull-adorned throw pillow guarantee that this entirely-gray-and-white master bedroom is anything but boring.

Ok.. these ideas are cool. BUT im 14 and i personally would not pick any of these for my room. Bold colors like these are going to go out of style. They seem cold and bare. The rooms are too big. A normal room would be around 11×12. I personally will not want bold colors, i wouldn’t want them because say when im 17 i dont want people to think im imature. A room should yes desribe a persons personallity but a room should transition easily from young teen to older teen. And people dont want to redo their room every year or two…sorry for being so harsh.

Picking a wallpaper to cover an entire room is a commitment and an investment. Keep the rest of the room grounded by sticking with the same palette and choosing furniture in modern, minimalist styles.

Consider the options of a polished room design. With a solid white background detailed with a bold lined border in black, laying the foundation for the polished theme is easy. Incorporate your desired pops of color with bright-bordered sheet sets and throw pillows for the room. Keeping your treasured memories close by is easy with frames of different sizes and finishes to hang around the room.

This twin bedroom is a guest room in a Carribean bamboo house. The bamboo, a traditional building material in the Grenadines, came from nearby Saint Vincent, where it is always harvested when the moon is on the wane. The belief is that termites quickly devour any bamboo cut when the sap is rising, even once the wood is cured.
