If space for a tree is tight, miniature box trees look super smart wrapped up in fabric such as velvet and placed on your bedside table. Don’t forget to put a small dish underneath the pot to catch any water.

The refurbishment of this central London townhouse was a case of sisters doing it for themselves; interior designer Amanda Baring’s sister is the owner. A painting of a party dress hangs in a frame (see how to do your own version here) while curtains made from ‘Les Chiens’ cotton from Clarence House a playful note to the bedroom, which mixes an array of print and pattern.

Bring a redundant fireplace up to scratch for the party season by lining it with wallpaper. Simply take the dimensions of the inside of your fireplace, cut out the wallpaper to fit and Blu-Tac it into place. A few ornamental logs, tea lights or strategically placed baubles also help achieve this festive look.

This blend of pink and purple is perfect for little girl’s bedroom colors that will grow with the child. Give the feminine shades a unique twist with thoughtful application. Pair it with soft neutrals and hints of periwinkle for a classic-meets-glam vibe. This room’s lavender walls, window treatments, and throw pillows work well for a teen, and later on it can suit a guest room. The classic furniture pieces suit either purpose, and simple switches can introduce more subdued accent colors.

A school uniform chair would be a truly special feature for any child or teenager’s room – uniform, sports kit, brownies, cubs, a favourite party dress, any outfit can become an eye-catching piece of furniture with a little imagination. Here, I used a digital fabric design and combined it onto my favourite style of armchair. Wallpaper tends to get a bad rap for making rooms look small and cluttered, but using the right style and technique does just the opposite. Add a bold wallpaper pattern to a focal wall, like your headboard wall.

A modern bedside table and monochromatic rug designed by Studio Ashby feature in the guest bedroom in a flat that has been transformed from a stark new-build to a characterful home. The pattern on the padded headboard is reflected in the artwork above the bed.

This year we decided to give our bedroom a mini makeover. Sometimes a theme wall can do the trick as is the case here where Farrow & Ball’s Dix Blue was used as the background. The room feels light and airy and I won’t deny it, feminine too. The tall headboard of the upholstered bed and the brass accessories give it a luxurious look that is always a pleasure to come back to.

A cozy, pillow-lined window seat is the perfect spot for a teen girl to write, read or imagine. This sweet seat is flanked by pretty white and gold sconces for easy-access reading light and a small side table to hold drinks and snacks. It also doubles as chic built-in storage!

A room fit for a princess doesn’t have to purely consist of soft pinks. We love the addition of a fiery orange wall and red, orange and purple rug; the clashing hues of which add character to the scheme.

Creating a cosy play area in the corner of the room is easy. All that’s needed is a heavy pile rug and plenty of cushions – we love the mix of neutrals and brights here. The modular shelving and lighting further delineate the area from the rest of the room.

I stayed at the Ludlow Hotel in New York’s Lower East Side last October and I instantly fell in love with my room. The stark black four-poster bed was the perfect contrast to whitewashed walls and beams. The industrial black window frames were dressed with heavy patterned pleated silk shades. The massive brass pendant lamp, patterned flat-weave rug, sheepskin throws and deeply veined marble coffee tables accented the decor perfectly. And the view of downtown Manhattan was of course unbeatable. Image credit

Despite her classical aesthetic, Gytha has incorporated more modern touches in the flat. She opted against cornicing in favour of a cleaner finish and enhanced the New York loft effect by painting all the window frames dark brown.

In the main bedroom of product designer Anthony Joseph – one half of kitchenware company Joseph & Joseph – mustard textiles were chosen to complement the walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Mole’s Breath’

In this flat designed by Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works, the back wall of the main bedroom is papered in a striking green de Gournay wallpaper. The dramatic design makes a wonderful feature wall. The dream bedroom for teens, back comforter with large pink flowers on it and gold stars on the wall. Where did that comforter and sham set come from?? M daughter loves it and I cannot seem to find anything similar. Beautiful room!

A child’s room isn’t just for sleeping in. Encourage creativity with a fun play area. Closed cupboards keep things tidy so the focus is on the important things: chalkboard drawings and artwork displayed on a handy shelf.

I LOVE # 3. I’ve mached most of it sofar in my room but cant seem to find the bed style. I also love # 4 and have merged some of that style into my room. Designer Ebba Thott has kept a simple elegant feel in this London bedroom. With the problem of a large window at the end of the space, she has created a sense of entrance and drama through symmetry – placing the bed, which is flanked by two stylish mid-century wooden nightstands, directly in the middle of the room; and using a blind that is dramatic in its scale, but simple in its design. Pictures stacked on the floor rather than hung give a clean, relaxed feel.

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed space perfect for entertaining. This twin guest bedroom is decorated with a pastel pink colour scheme featuring white gauzy canopies, making for a pretty and sophisticated room that would be perfect as a girls’ bedroom.

The washi tape is back. Not sure you should decorate your entire room with washi tape, but the door and light switch ideas sure are cool. Match them up with complimentary patterns and tapes and you are good to go with unique room decor that you can change when you no longer want it or find it to be quite as awesome as when you put it up.

Relocating to Oxford after 15 years in Japan and Hong Kong, the owners of this modern Victorian house put together a team of experts to create a mostly open-plan layout full of intriguing design details to capture the imagination.

We’re not suggesting you take your bedroom outdoors (our climate’s not quite reliable enough!) but we do suggest you take inspiration from this colour scheme of mustard yellow and ecru, the stylish bed and linen featuring pastoral scenes and the accessories: wicker baskets used as a bedside table and battered vintage suitcases for further storage.

Small rooms require savvy storage solutions, so here Ursula Wesselingh of Room to Bloom has avoided free-standing furniture and made use of the alcoves. The bed, drawers and shelves are painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Breakfast Room Green’ to unify the scheme.

There are four beds tucked into the eaves of this large dormitory-style children’s bedroom at Kate Earle’s chalet in the French Alps. Each bed has a curtain and a built-in chest so that the children have their own space and can store personal things. A skylight floods the attic room with natural light and bright colours throughout add continuity.
