When it came to designing this Chelsea home, Stephen Eicker most enjoyed working on this bedroom, belonging to the owner’s two sons, aged three and six. His starting point was the eldest’s obsession with trains, and this led him to the wallpaper by The New Yorker cartoonist Saul Steinberg, which he teamed with a turquoise carpet with red-and-white fabrics. Accessorised with vintage toy trains, the room is original and playful without being overdone or saccharine.

The bedroom of artists Linda and David Heathcoat-Amory is a graceful high-ceilinged cube. To the left of the four-poster bed hangs a Pissarro drawing; the painted pale-blue and white stripes on the walls were inspired by the photographer Derry Moore’s house.

The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. ‘The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,’ says Beata. The main bedroom has a bespoke sofa upholstered in Beata’s signature marbleised fabric and lion claw feet. Other notable features include a pair of breglass dance-hall mirrors from French Loft and the ceiling painted in ‘Lulworth Blue’ by Farrow & Ball. ‘I have this thing about painting ceilings blue. It seems over the top, but it adds a feeling of height and once it is in, you don’t really think about it’.

Ensure it’s spring all year around with a fresh, zesty green colour scheme. Don’t be fearful of combining patterns and prints in the same colour but this is best applied in smaller touches – one feature wall, one piece of furniture and textiles added to a neutral love to climb up into a raised bed but this option will also create extra storage space underneath or, as in this case, a little play area, decorated here with a highly textured rug and sweet wallsticker.

Bespoke storage with a fun twist, like these clever wall mounted boxes, can add character but also provide essential storage for toys and books. We like the contrasting pop of orange inside which is picked up on by the cushions and lamp too.

These are some some incredibly creative ideas! I love how these designs make the most of small spaces. Another option is to purchase furniture with multiple purposes. A great choice is a Zoom-Room or Zoom-Desk. Zoom-Room is a 21st century version of the Murphy Bed. It’s a remote controlled retractable Wall Bed that snakes up behind the cabinet instead of folding down, so you can put your flat screen TV or bookshelves in front. The Zoom-Room is customizeable with custom cabinets, home office accessories, finishes, and materials. It combines both function and great design.

This sweet, galleried play area designed by Trine Miller, has the dual function of creating an adventurous play space, while also keeping toys contained and out of view. ‘The idea was that the gallery was very much their private space,’ says Trine, ‘rather like a tree house.’ Beneath, a small bathroom has been installed.

The owners of this newbuild Bahamas beach house turned to trusted interior designer John McCall to provide their house with a British sensibility, practical furnishings and interiors that are not ‘too beachy’.

Despite several attempts at finding the perfect paint colour, designer Fiona Parke and owner Bodil Blain settled on ‘New Silver’ from Sanderson. A soft gold headboard, chevron throw and pink patterned cushions add personality to the soft, oh so chic scheme.

Designer Adam Bray chose an earthy palette for the main bedroom of this London flat: the striped silk used for the headboard and curtains is ‘Charles X’ from Claremont and the jute carpet is ‘Compass’ from Tim Page. The striped silk curtains and headboard look matt in contrast to the glossy walls, as does thick jute carpet in a gutsy herringbone. A pop of vivid green from a lacquer bedside table and an elegant plaster lamp with vellum shade are all reflected in a Maison Jansen-style mirror.

In this converted Cotswolds barn, interior designer Pippa Paton has combined modern design with natural materials to create a minimalist haven that maintains its rural identity. This bedroom, which is flooded with light at the top of the barn, is subtly decorated with children in mind. Plain white walls are accented with brightly coloured accessories and soft, comfortable low seating.

I would describe this bedroom as ‘cosy contemporary’ and it’s the sort of space I could relax in at the end of a busy day.  It is fairly minimalist, but not as stark as a white or grey bedroom, with an on trend geo pattern and a soft colour palette, with some warmth from the brass lamp and wooden side table.  I also love the white painted floor boards and think it is a look that could be quite easy to re-create. Image credit

The neat attic bedroom of designer Hugh Leslie’s Chelsea studio is partially clad in horizontal tongue-and-groove boarding. This is a good trick to visually widen a small room. Try the Georgian range from The English Panelling Company, which would create a similar effect.

Make the most of your small bedroom by using furniture to provide the storage that many undersized rooms lack. Case in point: this lovely, shabby chic bedroom substitutes a small dresser for a traditional nightstand, and makes the most of a recessed nook with a china cabinet to hold linens, sweaters, and other bulky items. That’s smart and beautiful.

Light and airy bedroom with vibrant tone. Grey, pink, white color scheme and everything in this girls’ bedroom go well with each other, the triptych wall art, Moroccan-inspired rug and curtains, elephant motif throw pillow…PBteen

  1. Four bunk beds line a wall of the kids’ room in this stone house in Luberon. The paired back design of the house is made playful here with polka-dot walls (and matching bed linen), colourful soft toys and a tiger rug.
Folksy textiles look fantastic when added to an otherwise simple scheme. The eclectic display of ornaments on a shelf above the bed fits with the theme and looks great – just ensure you hang it high enough so you don’t hit your head every morning!
Architect Francesca Oggioni had to set aside her rationalist principles when she was planning a new layout for her listed house in west London, so it would work as a family home, workspace and backdrop for an extensive art collection. This spare bedroom on the top floor has neutral decoration allows the artwork to be the focus of the room.

I’m 13 and I like to say that these layouts, ideas for bedrooms are great. Considering the fact that i have a big bedroom. I do agree with you Olivia 12 is the best, I love that they are not afraid of putting a little spot up there to chill or even to just sit there and enjoy time. It may be hard to believe that I have a room that big but it is very true.
