The conversion of this Victorian terrace in west London was a collaborative effort between Thomas Croft Architects, John Cullen Lighting and designer Sarah Delaney. In the main bedroom, an exotic hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper depicting oriental birds amid trees and flowers on a silver background is combined with panelling salvaged from another local house refurbishment.

Maximising light and space was essential to show the owner’s post-war art and sleek French art deco furniture to their best advantage in this elegant Pimlico flat. The main bedroom and en suite in this barn conversion in Kent follows a calm-inducing minimalist scheme. The walls of both rooms have been painted with Little Greene’s ‘French Grey Pale’. Rustic touches such as the cow skin rug, wooden stool and exposed brick wall add textural interest to the overall look.

Tweens are notorious for being a fan of one thing one week to totally flipping and loving something else the next. Shelving and under-bed storage leave room for them to store things until they’re cool again.

Bedrooms should be tranquil and relaxing! When I redecorated mine, I chose a very pale grey wall colour with matching bed linen and curtains! I hung my floor-length curtains high up on the wall, and to the sides of the window frames to create the illusion of height and larger windows. This maximises the light coming in to the room, and together with the white painted wooden floor, gives the room a calm and airy feel. I kept the decor fuss free, just adding different patterned textiles in the same colours for some visual interest, and warmed up the look by adding some copper accessories. A light chain and some industrial style cage lights either side of the bed gives a cosy glow at night and my bedtime reading supply (interior magazines) are kept handy by the bed and doubles up as a bedside table! For grown-ups a bedroom is a place of tranquillity and calm. But do young children have the same needs? A bedroom is their space – a chance to distill their rainbow coloured personality into a single (usually fairly small) room. And children come with a lot of stuff – which usually means they’re living in the aftermath of a tornado of toys. Organisation is key – it’s all about creating order from the chaos without becoming a control freak. Which is why I love bedrooms with clever, inventive storage. The trick is to balance your desire for organisation with plenty of bright, colourful, child-friendly fun. Beds with built-in storage, slim-line desks and bookshelves all great ways to use every scrap of space as efficiently as possible. The clever furniture and pops of colour in this photo are neat enough to please the grown-ups whilst still being perfect for the kids. When deciding on bedroom colour ideas, you should remember to consider not just the walls and floor, but also the furniture and choice of bedclothes. Simple magnolia walls, for instance, can be offset with ebony wood-tones and dark fabrics for a cool, stylish look, or with bold, vibrant fabric choices to create an overall design that’s young and funky. Whatever colours you choose, it’s important to remember that you have to sleep in your bedroom, so make sure the overall effect is peaceful and conducive to relaxation.
