In this north London house, designed by Caroline Holdaway, the light wall panelling and white bedlinen act as a foil for various patterned Celia Birtwell fabrics in the main bedroom. The owner Paul says, ‘It’s the most lovely house to wake up in. We never completely lower the bedroom blinds, so we wake up with the light. In spring, the views are of blossom, in summer of leaves, in winter the sky.’

It’s always so nice to refresh your space in little ways. You did such a good job. I love what you’ve done with the room in general. I’m actually obsessed with palette headboards my boyfriend is in the process of making us a smaller one, but repurposing it into a bed frame was a great idea. It looks awesome.

It’s exciting to open up possibilities with the girls’ dorm inspiration we’ve created with your decorating freedom in mind. Adding geometric plush pillows in contrasting colors turns your bed or chairs into fun focal points of the room. Bring depth into your dorm room design by placing our peel-and-stick wallpaper in a shiplap design on the walls. Pegboards and caddies offer you a place to keep important memos and information close at hand.

With the distressed wood of the floor and walls, this room needs little else to give it character and warmth. Netural tones, natural textures and a touch of colour from a pretty patterned bed spread are a subtle but welcome addition.

Many parents agree that the creation of a place for a child, where he would be interested to learn, play, develop and grow, is a very important task. The environment of children has a huge impact on how they grow and develop, so parents are always trying to make a room for their children comfortable and fun as much as possible. This family home in Notting Hill was the work of Maria Speake, who along with husband Adam owns reclamation company Retrouvius. The children’s bedroom is decorated in Maria’s playful style, with bright green carpets, bold patterns and fun birch-ply shelving. The curtain fabric is by Svenskt Tenn.

The best thing about having a small or strangely shaped room is the opportunity it presents to use your space imaginatively. The alcove behind the door, in the home of designer Patrick Williams of Berdoulat design, has been turned in to a charming sleeping nook. Enclosed behind the curtain are shelves, and a lamp for reading. The room is painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Lamp Room Gray’; while the random-width floorboards were bought on eBay. Reclaimed drawers are used under the bed as storage.

Michael S Smith has furnished the bedroom of his LA home with a polished-nickel bed designed by him for Jasper, on either side of which are a mirror and a lamp by John Dickinson – find similar pieces on 1st Dibs.

This open-plan bedroom designed by Suzy Hoodless and architect Johnny Holland of Hackett Holland, is the stuff of dreams. Wide-plank oak floorboards and geometric tiles create a division between the bedroom and a bathroom area with a free-standing ‘Vieques’ bath from Agape. Brass strips edge the fabric-fronted wardrobe wall. Graphic curtains made with fabric from Madeline Weinrib add colour to the white walls by the bed. See the rest of the house here.

Mix in old with the new to craft a look that is as unique as your little A monogrammed bedspread is a classic, but done up in magenta, it has a decidedly modern edge. Mod flower curtains contrast with vintage toile-print pillows. The curtains are hung at ceiling height to emphasize the large bold pattern of the fabric.

Vincent Frey is the grandson of the eponymous Pierre Frey founder (and the current deputy manager of the French fabric and furnishing company). Vincent and his wife Bianca hired architect Marika Dru, an old school friend of Vincent’s, to work on their Parisian flat, although decided to decorate it – including son Vasco’s room – themselves. We love the mix of a grand painting with a quirky hanging basket.

The stuff of dreams. Author and designer Paul Golding spent seven years restoring this this exquisite 18th century palazzo in Malta. ‘I couldn’t resist its romantic decay!’ Built by the distinguished Maltese architect Francesco Sammut, the bedroom is stenciled with a pattern copied from a Carmelite convent in Medina. The chandelier is from Julian Chichester, while the magnificent gesso and silver gilt bed and table were commissioned from Brighton-based furniture maker Lincoln Cato.

The pink and cream in this room is a little girl’s dream. But the sophisticated armoire and chandelier mean that it will suit her for years to come, and can be easily updated by changing the bedding and accessories.

  1. Here is a teenage bedroom in pink and blue. The large window is designed to accommodate a work desk for the child. The large pink sofa looks extremely cosy and inviting. The chandelier is another attractive feature in this room. The choice of subtle colours is an extension of the child’s personality.
The brief for this Paris bedroom was suitably intangible: she asked to be transported into another world. For decorator Jorge Estevez, who specialises in painting, it was vital his decorations were subtle so she wouldn’t tire of them, and also that there was ‘a feeling of the walls having been there before her’. The result is blissfully peaceful: in the bedroom, rough, eggshell-grey walls are painted with the most delicate of details to provide interest, and barely there friezes frame the doorway. The bedhead was made from an old door found in Brussels.
