This spare room in the restored Cumbrian farmhouse of Annabel Lewis (owner of V V Rouleaux) has an antique canopied bed covered in toile de Jouy, with a nightstand painted in a matching hue. The unframed paintings and books piled by the bed add a relaxed look to the period features.

I love this bedroom for a number of reasons: it just looks so calm, relaxing and welcoming. It belongs to Netherlands-based interior stylist and journalist Holly Marder, who has a fab blog called Avenue Lifestyle. When you see the before images you will realise just how successful this bedroom makeover has been. Before it was dark and decorated in a garish purple and orange, but Holly has transformed it into a calm retreat by painting the floorboards and walls white. I like how the design is asymmetrical, there’s two different bedside tables, two different lamps, and a cluster of framed pictures on just one side, but it still really works, you don’t have to be too rigid and use the same thing on each side, especially when there are two different people in the bed, with two different personalities! Image credit

White bedding provides a crisp contrast to the chintz in the Lake Room of Bowood house; the curtain pelmet is in a traditional swagged style. In 1987, Fiona undertook the task of redecorating much of the house. Having trained at Colefax and Fowler, she brought with her the influence of its quintessential English country-house style.

A gorgeous pale pink and grey colour scheme and the sweetest textiles. We’ll also be stealing the idea of the bird foot prints, which run across the floor and bed, up the wall and out the window: perfect for sparking a child’s imagination.

If space for a tree is tight, miniature box trees look super smart wrapped up in fabric such as velvet and placed on your bedside table. Don’t forget to put a small dish underneath the pot to catch any water.

The small white bedroom on the second floor of this Victorian terrace house had been painted a rather gloomy blue. To make the most of the light, newlyweds Sophie and Dan opted to repaint the room with Dulux’s ‘Pure Brilliant White’ while lemon yellow accents bring further warmth to the room. The divan bed is furnished with a buttoned ‘Bekkestua’ headboard from Ikea and the cane mirror hung over the bed was bought on a trip to Saffron Walden.

A peppy palette of pinks and yellow-base greens is playful, but it also transitions from a toddler room idea to teen decor. The mix of patterns knows no age barrier and provides plenty of other color options for makeovers later on. For example, the soft sage or fuchsia in the bedding could easily translate into a wall color, and the room would still sport a cohesive design.

The owners of this west London house employed a skilled team to restore and complement its original features, and create a home with a feeling of permanence after a lifetime of moving. The house is a tall, mid-nineteenth-century white stucco building that they wanted to work well for twenty-first-century family life. ‘We were determined to avoid beige banker chic,’ the owner explains. A portrait by Betsy Podlach above the Howe fireplace inspired the palette for the main bedroom.

A spare bedroom with wooden furniture and a window seat in the terrace house of Lady Wakefield. The beautiful Georgian window – found in a junk shop on the King’s Road – was added in 1998 by the owners.

Not a design scheme for the faint hearted but one that we rather love. The furniture may have a Louis XV feel but the introduction of hot pink and lime green accessories and the all-over lattice effect wallpaper keep it ultra contemporary.

Have a small space? This kids’ room designed by Eve Mercier packs a lot of punch. Housed in a petite family home (a former artist’s studio in Chelsea), this multi-purpose room includes a loft bed, two wall-mounted benches that transform into beds (bed-linen is concealed below), and a third, drawer bed (pictured here) which slides out when needed.

Light and airy bedroom with vibrant tone. Grey, pink, white color scheme and everything in this girls’ bedroom go well with each other, the triptych wall art, Moroccan-inspired rug and curtains, elephant motif throw pillow…PBteen

This is a gorgeous example of a modern bohemian bedroom, achieving a relaxed and simple yet cosy atmosphere. I love how the dark navy walls finish just shy of the ceiling, adding the sense of height and drama with the fabulous pendant over the bed. A hanging rattan chair with sheepskin looks like a perfect place to swing on whilst reading your papers in the morning with a coffee, and THAT giant fig leaf tree adds a powerful punch of green, and the all important link to nature. Image credit

The bunk bed, apart from providing comfort, also offers a play area above and enough storage capacity. The cutout of the butterflies and the teddy bear denotes a child friendly atmosphere.

There are few places where a teen can express themselves unabashedly. The bedroom is the top choice. The beauty of being a teenager is that the world is their oyster. Their favorite things are diverse and sometimes discordant, but with some planning, ideas can tie together beautifully.
