The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. ‘The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,’ says Beata. The main bedroom has a bespoke sofa upholstered in Beata’s signature marbleised fabric and lion claw feet. Other notable features include a pair of breglass dance-hall mirrors from French Loft and the ceiling painted in ‘Lulworth Blue’ by Farrow & Ball. ‘I have this thing about painting ceilings blue. It seems over the top, but it adds a feeling of height and once it is in, you don’t really think about it’.

Take a decorating tip from Lisa Teague Studios, and create interest in your small room by placing your bed at a slight diagonal. It’s even better when a pretty folding screen takes the place of a traditional headboard; the screen acts as a focal point for the room, drawing the eye upwards to increase the visual size of the space. Another use for a folding screen in the bedroom is as a privacy barrier around the bed. This is especially good in a studio apartment, or in a shared children’s…MORE bedroom.
Repurpose an ordinary bookshelf by turning it into a kid-friendly storage space. Here, colorful bins provide an easy place to organize kid’s stuff. Once your little one knows where everything belongs, she’ll be more likely to clean up after playtime on her own. Reserve the top shelf of the bookcase to display collectibles and picture frames. Tight storage space under the bookshelf can be reserved for oversized coloring books or posters.
The design of this room is in keeping with the rest of the house, in which all rooms are furnished with Scandinavian and mid-century pieces. Heidi and Steve were collecting these before they met. Pieces sourced from dealers and furniture fairs – and found in skips – include classic Knoll, Eames, Ercol and Hans Wegner furniture with some contemporary pieces by Hay and Donna Wilson thrown in for good measure. Artwork, including vintage Carry On posters, a Lucienne Day silk mosaic and work by Pink Floyd designer Storm Thorgerson, hangs on the walls.
Proof that one can still create a functional, stylish bedroom in a small area. A bunk bed with a built-in desk frees up space for a sofa, and built-in storage, hidden hanging rails and wall pegs ensure the room is kept clutter-free.
This room is filled with simple styling ideas that make all the difference: a winning colour combination of grey and pink, a feature wall with a clever display rail, some choice bedding and a pretty chandelier. All together, they make up a gorgeous girls’ room.
Hi, I am 13 almost 14 and in this next 2018 April or summer I will be moving. I have always shared a room, but I will have my own room. I never thought of having my own room and want it to be great. These are all super pretty and cool. But I just don’t know what kind of room I want, like what style or theme, it’s all so crazy. But these are great. They help me think of what I want. But I don’t know. I don’t know if you can help me, but thanks!

Proof that you can make the functional beautiful is this mosquito-net-draped bed at the Segera eco retreat in Kenya, started by businessman and entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz, a passionate advocate of conservation and sustainable tourism.
After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France’s Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a French farmhouse retreat there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed space perfect for entertaining. This twin bedroom is decorated with a pastel pink colour palette and features white gauzy canopies, which are often adored by children (particularly those who like princesses). The subtle scheme is ideal for young and teenage girls alike as this style is both fun and ‘grown-up’.
Originally, Claire intended to do the decoration of the house herself. ‘Rather naively, I thought it would be enjoyable. To begin, I went to a Graham & Green warehouse sale somewhere on the A40. It was a complete bun fight and I felt totally overwhelmed. I came back with one armchair that now lives in the playroom and said to Dom, We are going to need help.’
Virginia White’s harmoniously diverse decoration of Lucy Turvill’s award-winning newbuild in Suffolk includes this spare room. Blinds made in a Florence Broadhurst fabric dress the narrow windows.
