We often think bold and bright when we think of kids’ bedrooms but softer hues can be calming. Pick three tonal hues like the blue, green and cream here and carry them through from wall paints to furniture and accessories.

If you’re considering florals but don’t want an overly feminine scheme, here’s your inspiration: a fresh print combined with contemporary accessories in strong yellow and green hues. The base of whites and greys keeps it sophisticated too.

A painted headboard by Paola Cumiskey adds elegance to the main bedroom of this Norfolk village house belonging to Alan and Sarah Wilson. The house was designed by George Carter (who is known primarily for his award-winning gardens).

Creating a coastal bedroom design is simple, too. Your first impulse might be to think of the sloped ceiling and cramped space of an attic bedroom as a minus, but instead, embrace it as a plus. When the bed is piled high with quilts, pillows, and shams, and surrounded by simple, yet lovely furnishings as in the adorable country bedroom shown here, the sloped ceiling and limited square footage simply add to the cozy vibe.

When deciding on bedroom colour ideas, you should remember to consider not just the walls and floor, but also the furniture and choice of bedclothes. Simple magnolia walls, for instance, can be offset with ebony wood-tones and dark fabrics for a cool, stylish look, or with bold, vibrant fabric choices to create an overall design that’s young and funky. Whatever colours you choose, it’s important to remember that you have to sleep in your bedroom, so make sure the overall effect is peaceful and conducive to relaxation.

The gallery wall above the bed adds a symetrical dimension to the traditional bedroom, making it instantly appealing. (See 100 ideas for hanging art for more tips.) I love glamorous bedrooms that are sophisticated and not too glitzy. I love this bedroom because, even though it’s flowery, it has a masculine edge – due to the opulent dark walls and pared-back design integrity of the rest of the room. While it’s generally true that oversize furniture doesn’t work in a small room, there are always exceptions. For example, the canopy bed here is nearly as large as the tiny bedroom, but instead of cramped, the space looks perfect. The secret is in the clean, simple lines of the bed, along with its color – white – matching the walls to eliminate contrast.

For a girly look, choose heart bedding and pretty curtains to match. A pink table lamp continues the theme, while furniture in a light-coloured wood is more subtle and won?t overpower the girly furnishings and colour scheme.

I was drawn to this space initially because of the use of pattern and colour in the cushions.  The navy blue and mustard hues are an intriguing but very complementary pairing; with the pattern visually lifting the entire space.  The warmth of the earthy tone-on-tone colour palette has soothing atmospheric qualities: perfect for a bedroom.  But the showstopper is the seamless incorporation of industrial inspired design via the vintage wall lighting.  An excellent illustration of how urban styling can be blended into a space without appearing too harsh or cold. The Pink Room in Bradwell Lodge is fun, feminine and fancy. A bold Bernard Thorp fabric, ‘Brimble’, has been used on the walls and bed, and for the blind: this creates a lovely sense of continuity in the space.
