Here, they matched the bedcover from The White Company to the beams, given a greyish, limed-effect finish to retain a sense of airiness.

Creating a cosy play area in the corner of the room is easy. All that’s needed is a heavy pile rug and plenty of cushions – we love the mix of neutrals and brights here. The modular shelving and lighting further delineate the area from the rest of the room.

The addition of a large basement extension to this Edwardian house with bright, modern interiors freed up space on the upper floors for bright and capacious rooms, and created a more fluid layout ideal for family living.

Schooled in matters of taste by her mother, when designer Emma Burns inherited the former stables that her parents had converted as a weekend retreat, she put into practice the principles that now guide her professional work for Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler. Taking on the conversion of a disused chapel in Somerset, artist Jonathan Delafield Cook, illustrator Laura Stoddart and their two children (11 and 13 years old) have made the smooth transition from incomers to long-term residents. In this bedroom a simple storage wall has been filled with coloured boxes that match the rainbow pom poms at the window. A sweet mid-century desk for home work sits in front of the window.

This one the Playa Grande Beach Club is painted in what it’s owner calls, ‘faded bathing-suit colours’, and layered with art, objects and vintage furnishings. 1. When decorating a tween girl’s room, don’t be afraid to pack it with pattern. Introduce different prints by layering patterns similar in color yet different in scale. An excellent rule of thumb is to stick with one large-, one medium- and one small-scale pattern. This will ensure the layered look appears balanced rather than busy.
