This is a photo of my 8 year old son’s room, styled and photographed by myself. It’s a modern Breton themed bedroom. I styled this bedroom in the autumn to bring a fresh, bright and happy feel to the room. I made sure that a cosy feel is maintained, with the soft throw on the bed for bedtime tucking in and the cushion for casual lounging. Everything is positioned conveniently, such as the comforting bedside light, an accessible bedside table for his drink and storage below his table for toys. Next to his bed is a laundry bag which encourages tidiness. To the right of his bed is a large shelf of favourite books, recently converted to his workspace. To the left of his bed is an empty area for running around with friends. Image credit
Flea market lamps are one of the most affordable ways to add one-of-a-kind lighting to a tween girl’s room. Although found with a beige shade for $25, this brass lamp was updated with a black paper shade picked up at a big-box retailer for less than $15.
Inspired by masterpieces, our decoration team paired tactile and luxurious textures in deep velvets with bedlinen decorated with roses. Like many a family home, there are conflicting tastes present in the home of Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada, furniture designers and owners of Casamidy. For starters, the two prefer different materials – Anne-Marie likes metal, while Jorge loves leather – but the two have created a home with a uniformity of spirit while still reflecting their personal tastes. In the master bedroom, the hand forged iron ‘Diego bed’ by Anne-Marie takes centre-stage.
Young adults are hard to please so give them lots of input. Provide plenty of storage so there’s no excuse for mess, and make sure they have a good study area. Invest in a trundle bed for those sleepover parties, and let them keep their favourite accessories on display in mounted box shelves.
A dash of vintage, a sprinkle of whimsy and a drop of contemporary all seamlessly intertwined into this gorgeous kid’s room styled by Petite Vintage. The easy to reach storage space makes it easy to tidy up and keep things in their place. Plenty of floor space allows for freedom to move, play and imagine, and the bed frame creates a creative space within a space where dreams are made. The colours used are striking and pleasant and the warmth of the light enhance the colours and soften the geometric lines of the bed frame and the carpet. My tips for decorating a children’s bedroom would be to remember that fairy lights are not just for Christmas – use them in a child’s room to create a dreamy atmosphere and to not be afraid to mix vintage and contemporary styles. Designer Mark Gillette makes careful use of colour and lighting in his flat, proving that even small spaces can handle a dark, dramatic palette of jewel-like amber offset with black and white. ‘I’m not afraid of colour, but I like to keep it contained,’ he says. The well-positioned light above the bed is useful for reading but also spotlights the white bedding, bringing light and space to the centre of the room. The clothes storage is also a clever design feature, both practical and beautiful.
