‘He took time to consider each space and how the light falls at different times of day, making every angle, aperture and window a picture in itself. He created contemporary interiors managed to contrast with and yet enhance the ancient setting.’ Here a Le Corbusier chair sits in harmonious contrasts to its medieval surroundings.
Afraid of being too stark? To keep your small bedroom from feeling cold or void of personality, layer your whites with different textures and white-on-white patterns for drama. In the bedroom above, the simple addition of a patterned throw and chrome bedside lamps transforms the room for sterile to stylish.
For those who live in small spaces or are short on storage, this chic little wall-hanging from Ikea will keep all your bedside paraphernalia perfectly in place. Or, if you’re feeling particularly crafty you could make your own.
There’s no denying that many little girls love all things pink, but that doesn’t mean a girl’s room has to look like a bubblegum factory. The bedroom from Steele Street Studios shown here demonstrates how well neutrals can work in a girl’s bedroom. The wonderful lighting fixture, fun pennant banner, and polka dot bedding add just enough whimsy to the space, yet the overall look is rather sophisticated.
There’s a few things that are key to how you feel when you walk into your bedroom – mainly it comes down to floors, walls, furniture and decoration. If you’re renting you may not be able to touch the floors or walls and will have to work with what you have. If it’s your own house however, you may be wondering which colour to paint the walls so they go with your floors, or so you can make a small bedroom appear bigger. Pay attention to these elements in the photos.
as a 15 year old. i would say a lot of these rooms look like they were designed by some 40 year old women who loves photography, and the outdoors and lives in uptown new jersey. there pathetic. some of them are cute for maybe 10 year olds but they look way to modern and boring.
The twin kids’ bedroom in this architect’s minimal family home is decorated in crisp white with fun splashes of bright colour. Elegant cushions make for a cosy corner on the right, while the kid’s workspace features a rustic wooden stool.
Decorating with multiple colours can be an intimidating task for even the most seasoned of designers. No matter how genuine our initial enthusiasm for venturing across to the other side of the paint chart, it is all too easy to get cold feet and talk ourselves out of being more courageous with colour, settling instead for safe, neutral schemes. Colour, however, shouldn’t be used exclusively to make a statement. Gabby Deeming set herself the challenge of creating four palettes from the Mylands paint range. Each palette is made up of four shades that would sit together harmoniously in a space, and work beautifully with textiles and wallpapers. The walls are painted in ‘Piccadilly’ and ‘Palmerston Pink’, £34.66 for 2.5 litres matt emulsion, while the floor is in ‘Honest John’, £21.65 for 1 litre water-based eggshell, all from Mylands.
This is the one bedroom at the tiny Central Hotel & Café in Copenhagen, in the Vesterbro neighbourhood. The room necessarily makes use of the tiny space and even tinier windows, but the green walls with wooden accents adds plenty of interest to a potentially boxy bedroom.
Eye-popping aqua makes a statement in this bedroom as a striking backdrop for crisp white trim and girl’s bedroom accessories. Pops of pink, inspired by the cherry blossom tree painted on the wall, contrast the room’s ultra-colorful walls. Through the white doors, a bright white room awaits with furniture placed to make it the perfect reading nook. Subtle girl’s room themes like this can grow with her into teen years and beyond.
Touches of blue introduce colour and pattern in the main bedroom of a divine Provençal house by Andrzej Zarzycki. These include the painted woodwork, patchwork bed cover and large painting by Sarah Pickstone.
Known for their sensitive restoration of historic buildings in Scotland, conservation architects Nick Groves-Raines and Kristin Hannesdottir relished the challenge of saving Lamb’s House in Leith, where they now live and work. The elegant main bedroom has an original beamed ceiling, complemented by a large rustic wooden headboard.
Near the site of a Sussex country house demolished in 1911, Richard Taylor and Rick Englert have built a Jacobean-style manor at Whithurst Park. It took a year to get planning permission and two more to build. The result is certainly striking and bears some of the signatures of the prodigy houses built in the era that its design evokes, such as Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. But as Kit explains, ‘It was the site itself and essence of Sussexness that made me design it as I did.’
