¡duermen tres!

There is no reason at all that a small bedroom – even a really tiny bedroom – can’t be every bit as gorgeous, relaxing, and just plain full of personality as a much larger space. (As proof, check out the elegant bedroom from Laura Stein Interiors shown here.) The trick to creating a lovely bedroom when square footage is limited is to make smart use of the space you do have, keep furnishings scaled to the room, and most of all, not be afraid to show off your decorating chops.

When designer Douglas Mackie and his partner Julian Jackson bought this house in the Languedoc region of the South of France, it was a chance for Douglas – a knowledgeable collector of textiles – to show off his stock of older, ethnic pieces. ‘I have always been an avid collector of pieces from North Africa and Asia, and now their rich saturated colours sit wonderfully well in the shafts of sunlight of a southern home.’ In the spare bedroom a Persian jajim hangs against the brush-plastered wall in place of a headboard. On the floor is a vintage Moroccan rug, while the bed linen is from Conran.

I’m really into using dark colours in the bedroom. It creates such an intimate vibe and I find it incredibly relaxing, plus it’s super sophisticated and very glamorous! The designer did a great job in creating a room that incorporates beautiful traditional elements like the panelling and mouldings, but brings it up to date with bold lighting and metallics. To make this room more ‘me’ I’d add a few more POP art elements, calm accent colours and a bit of street chic with the accessories. Image credit

This Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom’s orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques). The wallpaper is ‘Alice’ by George Spencer, while Oka is a good match for the embroidered cushion covers.

One of five upstairs bedrooms, this room marries comfort with style. The cowhide rug and black and white patterened chest of drawers keep the colour sceme minimal, but a spash a green on the dresser continues the home’s connection to country-side.

A fresh color palette of blue-green, orange, and purple looks sunny in this shared girls’ bedroom. Turquoise walls complement soft peach curtains and table lamps. A modern take on a traditional floral pattern covers the beds and ties in the wall and curtain colors, and adds in a splash of soft lavender. These sisters traded traditional girl’s bedroom wall art for a corkboard outfitted in floral fabric. Here, they can pin up their latest masterpieces or show off their latest homework assignments.

This is a cute and colourful girl’s room with a nice and comfortable bunk bed. The floral wall paper is beautiful charging the room with positivity. The heart-shaped mirror and the lamp on the side table looks wonderful.

all these rooms are SUPER cool. Awesome creativity! But next time, it’d be great if maybe you guys could design a room thats, well, more affordable looking/ realistic. I mean, c’mon, we’re teenagers who dont really have THAT much extra cash on hand to use on hand haha. And maybe ‘simpler’ room sizes. The loft one is super cool, but its not like everyone has a loft in their room. . . . awesome ideas though!

This bedroom is an ode to antiquity with touches of the Neoclassical, Empire Style and Classical-inspired littered throughout the space, most of which was designed and made by Alexander himself – the headboard with colours of an Attic vase, for example. House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming has created a relaxed summer-holiday feel with a Mediterranean-inspired selection of wood and antique metal furniture. The oiled-oak ‘Clyde’ side table, is £550 from Pinch, while on the floor, the blue striped cotton dhurrie rug is from a selection at Guinevere antiques.

Sometimes, just one small detail which can bring a room together. In this case, the studs surrounding the bed’s cream headboard draws the eye, making the furniture the focal point of the room in the absence of any wall art. A perfect alternative for walls (or homes) where you can’t hang pictures.

wow, thanks for this post. I like the one with the stairs. It’s almost the same picture I have in mind years ago but never given a chance to have it in real picture. Anyway, happy to drop by and see your posts.

If space for a tree is tight, miniature box trees look super smart wrapped up in fabric such as velvet and placed on your bedside table. Don’t forget to put a small dish underneath the pot to catch any water.

Regardless of how old she is, most young girls will have some sort of preference towards what is put in their room, whether it be for the color you paint the walls, the art you hang on the walls, or the covers you put on the bed. So try to involve your daughter in the decoration process by having her look at online pictures of kids rooms with you, tag along with you while you search department stores for childrens bedding, or even come with you to the home improvement store to find paint samples. From their first glimpse of this country house in Norfolk, its owners were captivated and, with the help of interior designer Veere Grenney, have put their stamp on it. The key to successful children’s bedroom design is clever storage. Make storage practical, accessible and easy to use, so that children have a place where everything goes. Encourage children to have an input into the colour scheme or theme, if they buy into the idea of the room from the start and have a hand in how it is planned and arranged, then they are more likely to take pride in keeping it organised and tidy. Baskets, trays, cupboards with doors and drawers are all good options. If you have the luxury of space then try to keep storage to the outer edges of the room so that children have a clearly identifiable place in which to play. Room to play in a free and unstructured way allows children to be more imaginative in their learning.

Fiona Shelburne has a lot of experience decorating country homes, so she knew what she had to do when it came to this Hampshire home. The beautifully crafted four-poster bed, made by Richard Phillips, has red Le Cuona linen curtains; to lift the mood of the room, the inner fabric is the Claremont print ‘Plumettes’. Two bedside tables by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam are surmounted by French grisaille-painted mirrors. ‘The velvety carpet from Tim Page is lovely underfoot, says Fiona Shelburne, ‘but it has to be vacuumed all in one direction, rather like a cricket pitch. It looks its best covered with masses of tiny footprints at the end of the family weekend.’

Teenage girls’ bedroom decor should be different from a little girl’s bedroom. Designs for teenage girls’ bedrooms should reflect her maturing tastes and style with a youthful yet more sophisticated look and need to be very stylish, modern, fashionable and vibrant with energy. If it is possible, you can get your teenager involved in the decorating process. Your teen’s room will be her sanctuary, and should be designed with her best interests in mind. Here we have some greate inspirations for your reference!

The bedroom is one place in the home where you can really let your personality shine. Love a theme? Run wild with it. This beautiful bedroom, from Isme, incorporates Eastern elements into the furniture, bedding and wall art.

A large lattice design cotton dhurrie, ikat print cushions, headboard and curtains, rattan furniture and of course a voile draped canopy; if you’re thinking of a chic colonial theme, make OKA your first stop.

The bedroom of this London townhouse is the work of Amanda Baring, who designed it for her sister, the owner. The neutral hues keep it calm and warm, while a collection of black and white etchings decorate the walls.

As the pictures on the wall suggests, this has to be a lovely teenager’s space. The colour blue is instrumental in giving a soothing and calm impact to teenage excitements. The upholstered headboard with the mirrored night stand alongside gives a classy look to the room. The window treatment is another feather in the cap!

I don’t know about you, but I find that having non-themed rooms in my home is essential to the ever-changing needs of family life. What’s more, themed rooms spells hotel. And do we want to live in a soulless hotel? Thought not. Ask yourself, as children grow out of their beds, share with a sibling or move rooms, could their ‘old’ room be adapted as a snug, study or dining room? The littlies’ needs change so much and so quickly in those first few years, it really makes sense to go for a scheme that is multi-purpose but, most importantly, timeless. Turn convention on its head and experiment. This Farrow & Ball wide stripe is supposed to be hung vertically but I couldn’t resist flipping it ninety degrees. For furniture, see what you can find in flea markets and slap a coat of paint over it, or rummage around in local auction houses. Brown furniture is still well-priced and besides, it is so much more fun for a child to be grabbing their clothes out of an old chest of drawers that has a story to tell, than an identikit piece, hot off the production lines from China. Although they will only appreciate it (there’s always hope) when they move out, taking their ‘old friend’ with them. The overall effect is much more personal and full of character, which is what makes a home your home.

hi i am a 13 year old girl and i would just like to say that although i found loads of gr8 rooms i think that the room sizes are a bit big considering that i and all of my friends have very small bed rooms.

Jane Sacchi recounts the experiences of updating a twelfth-century tower in Florence, with her husband, architect Bruno Sacchi. ‘It took three years to transform it into an exceptional family home, during which period Bruno often wandered about with a hammer and chisel picking plaster off the walls to expose the frescoes.’

Keep yourself on track each day with a cool alarm or wall clock in your room. Match the colors of your clock to the colors in your bedding to instantly tie the entire room together. Or, pick a silver, white, black or gold clock to give your room a jeweled appearance. Set out a mini-fridge near your study zone, and you’ve instantly created a cozy learning corner that will encourage you to keep studying.

Sofia Barattieri di San Pietro of upmarket fashion website Motilo and interior designer Paolo Moschino worked together to achieve the art-deco feel of Sofia’s Kensington apartment. In the spare room, the bedside table, lamp and wall lights are all from Nicholas Haslam – while fresh flowers are a recurring theme, her main bedroom also features bedside blooms.

Your children are only young once so create a magical environment with furnishings and accessories that will kick start their imaginations. Curtained cubby hole bunkbeds are also a perfect way to give kids their own space.

HGTV fan lolabboutique ditched the usual little girl decor and created an antique, cottage-style bedroom that can easily work for all ages. To add a personalized and playful touch to any little girl’s bedroom, find unique representations of the letters that spell her name or her first initial. To mirror the framed L-O-L-A letters in this space, find antique wooden frames, paint them white and distress the edges for a simple weathered look. Print letters in various fonts on a manila background and add to the frame.

While modern and luxurious design ideas often tell you that you need to have a sitting area, small office, or a king size bed in your bedroom, don’t forget that a bedroom’s main function is to be a place to rest and recharge. And you don’t much to create a beautiful space to do so.

When it comes to home decor and bedroom styling I like my room to depict a clean, fresh ambience and provide a good air flow. My bedroom is where I go to unwind and read and it’s important that the space correlates with my wellbeing and mood. I adore neutral coloured bedrooms, with delicate pieces of furniture and accessories. Lighting and the ambience it provides is really important and I do recommend up to three different lighting focal points within a room, ranging from ceiling lights to bedside lamps. It’s also fun to play with a variety of different lightbulbs so that you can have a choice of whether to have a bright light on or something softer to suit your mood. Cushions and throws add character to a bedroom and provide different levels of texture which can make a room fabulous. I’m very fond of shabby chic furniture in a bedroom because it conveys a very romantic Parisian flair. With the correct accessories and a delicate neutral palette a glamorous shabby chic bedroom can be achieved and fabulously lived in. Image credit

I am looking for new ideas to decorate my twin daughter’s bedroom. These are some great ideas on different room decor. I love the simple clean look of Michaela Mildenhall’s design. We will have to look into some more styles and options for decorating! Thanks for sharing!

The rustic trend – bare brick walls, exposed lightbulbs and distressed finishes – started in restaurants. Want to get the look at home? Use a variety of textures along with a vibrant accent colour such as red or turquoise.

This room is filled with simple styling ideas that make all the difference: a winning colour combination of grey and pink, a feature wall with a clever display rail, some choice bedding and a pretty chandelier. All together, they make up a gorgeous girls’ room.

Citrusy bright, full of cheerful touches, and almost tropical in its sunshiny intensity, here’s a super-colorful bedroom from Lucy and Company that gets everything right: cute wallpaper, well-loved stuffed animals, a cheery throw blanket that ties the color scheme together, and more fun touches in the Roman shade, retro silver bookcase, and glass lamps. But it’s the lime green, sunny yellow, and fuchsia pink palette that steals the show. It’s hard to find a better color combo for a little girl’s…MORE bedroom.

If you are going to opt for minimalism in only one room in your house, that room should be the bedroom.  No distractions for relaxation and a perfect nights sleep.  Although this white bedroom scheme is definitely minimalist, I like the fact it has warmth due to the herringbone floor and interest added with the contemporary four poster.  The simple bedding looks luxurious too and I would be more than happy to take a nap between those sheets. Image credit

The age of your daughter will largely determine what type of décor or theme you should use in the room. With a newborn, you will want to find baby girl nursery room ideas, such as a farm animal or fairy theme, that will be appropriate for many years or that can easily be altered as your daughter grows and her tastes change. Circus design or farm animal themes are good baby room ideas for girls that your daughter will not quickly out grow. They are also both gender neutral themes that can be incorporated into a shared toddler room for girls and boys. For either of these designs, you can paint the walls of the room a neutral color such as pale yellow or blue and then purchase bedding, art, curtains, wall decals, and accessories that are consistent with the theme. Wall decals and pretty girls bedding sets with pink pigs, white ducks, yellow chicks and other barnyard animals are farm-themed accessories that are inexpensive and can be easily removed or when your daughter is older and wants to transfer her space into a teenage bedroom.

Children’s bedrooms should be fun, bold and playful. As a designer, I love to let my imagination run wild when working with children’s bedrooms. With a little inventiveness you can create the most wonderful spaces with unusual paint effects and bespoke joinery. Use MDF to create a built in bed in the shape of a house or teepee, section off a corner for a reading area in the shape of a castle or make the most of a tall ceiling with a mezzanine, as in the image above. Children love to have their own special space and creating a reading nook or hiding space allows them to escape into their own magical world. In the past I have designed rooms with tented ceilings, trampoline floors and a bed made from silver birch branches decorated with fairy lights. Go on – have some fun! Image Credit

All our high quality vinyl girl wall stickers are completely reusable and are perfect for temporary decoration. When your little princess feels like a change, simply remove the decals and move to another room or store them away on their original backing sheet.

The new kids’ collection for Zara Home is giving us some serious interiors inspiration. Not only do we love the dinosaur print bedding and sweet accessories but the sophisticated muted hues make a nice change from the primary colours seen in many of the high street ranges.

I agree with Sarah Akwisombe’s statement. I too, enjoy having a room in dark colours because it’s super inviting and makes me want to sleep and relax. However, I am not a fan of brown colour on anything else than wood. I see that most of the pictures here portray white bedrooms… the least appropriate colour for a bedroom in my opinion.

Multipurposing will help a tween get much more use out of her room. To create a tween-height gathering area, consider using a coffee table in the center of the bedroom. Once guests come over, the low stature of the coffee table makes it the perfect spot to pull up a pillow and snack while playing games or reading books.

If you’re anything like us, you get your design inspiration from anywhere and everywhere – including hotels. Dormy House in the Cotswolds is a contemporary meets country chic weekend retreat attracting smart city dwellers. It also happens to be designed by Emily Todhunter from Todhunter Earle, a name regular readers will recognise. Planes, trains and automobiles: the duvet covers, wall stickers and underbed boxes all draw on this theme. Good storage ensures the room is kept tidy but a simple chalk/pin board allows for a little creativity and a place to display treasured possessions.

An attic conversion makes for a perfect guest room. The scheme is simple but elegant with minimal but impactful pieces of furniture and furnishings. A sofa allows guests a little chill out time away from the rest of the house. Be careful though, they may not want to leave.

Originally, Claire intended to do the decoration of the house herself. ‘Rather naively, I thought it would be enjoyable. To begin, I went to a Graham & Green warehouse sale somewhere on the A40. It was a complete bun fight and I felt totally overwhelmed. I came back with one armchair that now lives in the playroom and said to Dom, We are going to need help.’

The interior designer behind this West London home was Ebba Thott. In the spare room a steel four poster bed, a modern take on a timeless classic, sits comfortably alongside a custom-coloured blue and white chintz by Marthe Armitage. The bedcover is by Holland & Sherry through Lelièvre in Paris.

In the main bedroom of product designer Anthony Joseph – one half of kitchenware company Joseph & Joseph – mustard textiles were chosen to complement the walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Mole’s Breath’

Hannah Cecil Gurney’s west London flat is a feast of luxurious colour, texture and pattern – little surprise given that her father founded the handmade wallpaper company de Gournay. In the main bedroom hand-painted silk cushions and a Burmese lamp pick up on the green in the ‘Badminton’ wallpaper from de Gournay, which ‘provides a cocoon of birds and butterflies that makes [Hannah] so happy’. The paper has been antiqued in order to give a tarnsihed effect.

A charming mix of antique textiles and a curtainless four-poster bed designed by Max Rollitt, make up the focal point of this London bedroom. Find a similar bedspread at the Antique Textiles Company or commission Cassandra Ellis to design and make one bespoke.

A peppy palette of pinks and yellow-base greens is playful, but it also transitions from a toddler room idea to teen decor. mix of patterns knows no age barrier and provides plenty of other color options for makeovers later on. For example, the soft sage or fuchsia in the bedding could easily translate into a wall color, and the room would still sport a cohesive design.

For House & Garden’s Carole Annett, a passing request for decorating advice from her friend, the interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch, turned into the top-to-bottom redecoration of her Surrey house. Carole chose Zoffany’s ‘Eleonora’ paper for a spare room.

As in their dining room and their upstairs hallway, the faux panelling in the spare room of Tarquin Bilgen and wife Isobel’s Suffolk farmhouse was painted by Alan Dodd. Prints and paintings of mountains, such as the one above the chest of drawers, provide a visual theme. Like the lamp? Vaughan do a similar sang-de-boeuf Chinese ceramic lamp base, £450 and shade, £177.

I am 20 y/o, I am in the United States Army and I live on post as a single soldier. The rooms the the single soldiers are given to stay in are very ugly and difficult to decorated I got several Ideas from this site and I enjoyed the different styles. Thank you. 🙂

In the London apartment of Venetian designer Alvise Orsini, ricepaper has been painted to match two eighteenth-century Chinese wall panels found at auction. ‘It is impossible to tell the difference,’ he says. The gilded bed, possibly by Georges Jacob (1739-1814) was found in Paris, while the eighteenth-century velvet bedcover, embroidered with gold thread, was acquired at a Christie’s textiles auction.

This bedroom is within the Cotswolds home of architect Richard Parr. The chest of drawers from Bryanmawr Furniture Makers, is made from oak and compliments the simple, yet timeless feel of the bedroom. The Fifties Italian vintage shield mirror hung over the bed was bought from The Cabinet Rooms a pop-up auction with great mid-century-modern pieces.

Simple, understated luxury with a dash of Gallic charm is the appeal of online boutique Bodie and Fou. Stock up on their don’t-want-to-wake-up-from-this linen bedding and steal their effortlessly cool styling ideas.

I love how Martyn Lawrence Bullard combines vibrant colours with serenity and calm in this bedroom; a perfect setting for colour lovers, who want to wind down in a relaxed setting after a hard day’s work. The different textures, such as the fur throw and carpet provide a great contrast to the mirrored bedside tables, which makes the room dynamic and interesting. I also love the ethnic element (Ikat cushions) combined with the ‘Modern Glamour’ style, which gives the room a new dimension. And how great is the coffee table at the end of the bed? I don’t like bedside tables, that are full of books and magazines, so this provides a great stage option that prevents cluttering the room and at the same time looks great! Image credit

There’s no denying that it’s the wallpaper that makes this room. The pretty, ditzy print used to paper the whole room is combined with classic white furniture and a pale cream carpet to ensure the overall scheme is not too busy.

In this bedroom in Morocco, a large Twenties French poster hung above the low-level bed acts as an extension of the headboard. For similar vintage posters of this size, head to Rennies Seaside Modern in Kent, or visit its online shop.

In the main bedroom of this vicarage in Hampshire, interior designer Max Rollitt has customised an antique four-poster bed found at auction, with a pretty scalloped frame. The wallpaper is ‘Adams Eden’ by Lewis & Wood.

So glad you like the ideas! Sadly I couldn’t find the tutorial that went along with that idea, but here is a link to a similar project with instructions: http://17shadesofmade.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/diy1/ hope that helps!

This modern children’s room has a self-contained, two-level unit within to make the large, open-plan space feel comfortable. This feeling is further enhanced with pops of colour and pattern. The blue tiger rugs are by Moustache from en.smallable.com.

Storage is key in small spaces, especially in the bedroom where most of your belongings are kept. When you don’t have a lot of space, you have to be creative with your storage. For example, you can use under-bed storage boxes to stash out-of-season clothing away and custom shelving to store things like shoes and books. You can even place a storage ottoman at the foot of your bed for extra seating and storage.

If you have a platform bed, create custom headboard by simply applying a material to the wall behind the bed. In the bedroom below, we applied a wood paneling to the wall behind the bed to create a custom headboard. The dark stained wood finish complements the platform bed color and ties it and the night stands together visually. You can make your headboard the full height of the wall or stop it part way up. To determine the minimum height for your headboard, prop up your pillows and measure 6”-8” (15-20 cm) above that.

Anyone who reads my blog will know that I ADORE dark, moody, inky walls so this bedroom image caught my attention immediately! Pairing that gorgeous deep teal paint with the rose pinks gives the room a feminine touch without it being ‘too girly’. The off-centered image gives a quirky touch and the white frame contrasts beautifully against the dark background making the image pop all the more. The teal blanket beautifully ties in with the paint, brightening the space, and the marble print cushion adds texture and is perfectly on trend! This bedroom is a grown up, beautifully modern, luxurious space that I would love to sink into. The only thing I would change would be the size of the headboard, the bigger the headboard the better in my eyes! Image credit

Arranging a small bedroom can be frustrating if you don’t first get an idea of where you would like everything to go. Before you call your friends to help you move your bed, grab a pencil and a piece of paper and sketch your roomlayout ideas. This will help you visualize your ideas before you put them into action.

The fact that bedrooms are personal spaces often shared with another person makes decorating tricky. One crucial tip to keep in mind as you consider bedroom ideas is to forego popular trends or styles in favor of what makes you happy. If there aren’t any significant bedroom remodeling changes, determining your furniture layout is the first (and biggest) decision you will need to make. Once you’ve settled on a bedroom layout, take the time to select colors and decor that reflect your personality, but also take into consideration the serene nature of a bedroom. If adding new decorations and furniture isn’t enough of an aesthetic change, you can turn your bedroom makeover into a full blown remodel by creating your own master bedroom suite, complete with a sitting room and master bathroom.

For me, the bedroom is a space that needs to be calming, simple and light. I hate clutter around me when I want to sleep so the minimalism of this room appeals to me. I also want my bedroom to be as bright as possible in the morning to motivate me at the start of the day, so the white walls, bedlinen and the painted floor are the perfect combination as they allow the light to bounce around the room. I love the natural touches of the bulbs, the raw wood of the bedside table, the baskets by the fireplace and the beautiful crocheted blanket, which add touches of character to the room.
